In order to find this book useful, readers must already own the LEGO EV3 Mindstorms kit; author Benedettelli provides a chart of pieces in the appendix that readers should acquire if they own different versions of Mindstorms kits. Tech-savvy students will find the projects engrossing, but be forewarned that this text is not for novice Mindstorms users or those new to robotics. Black-and-white drawings may prove challenging for some to compare with real life colored LEGOs. Readers are treated to a comic narrative throughout the book that mimics the book's progress, which can help break up the tedious nature of instructional text and drawings, though they are more entertaining than informative. About the Author

Daniele Benedettelli is known worldwide for his original LEGO robots, including his Rubik's Cube solvers and his humanoid robots. As a LEGO MINDSTORMS Community Partner (MCP), he helps to test and develop new MINDSTORMS products. He earned a master's degree in Robotics and Automation from the University of Siena in Italy. He holds educational presentations and workshops on Information and Communications Technology around the world and teaches robotics at the high school level.

Amazing and Fun Learning Tool from the Rubik Guy

I use dozens of mindstorm projects in our High School Robotics tutorials, and this is by far the most advanced, complete and innovative, and by FAR the most clearly illustrated. I tried out the projects at an advanced teach the teachers conference (also using Blankenships fine book: Robot's in the Classroom), which we buy in quantity, and even MS beginners "got" the pictures immediately.

The projects worked great with few glitches, and typical of No Starch, the code and diagrams were well edited and functional right out of the book. The author has a "save you money" attitude, and tries to show processor block techniques that don't require a laptop to execute, but also includes PC interfaces (see page references below) in advanced projects. As you probably know, you DO need the $350 Lego Mindstorms kit to conduct these experiments and build these projects! (For reference it is a great deal on Amazon, it is here: LEGO Mindstorms EV3 31313). This is a PROFESSIONAL level robotics kit, but one that even HS kids can enjoy.

Most books like this concentrate either on code or mechanics, and few do both well, let alone theory. I mean, even at over 400 pages and with 5 real projects, there is a LOT to cover, especially since this author really likes autonomous designs and working on deep (and custom!) details, like math and software that turn gear activators into transmissions via math (functions/code). Of the other top 3 MS project books, this is the ONLY one that not only covers scripting in detail, as well as gears/servos etc. AND also goes very deeply into logic, math, technical aspects of robotics, etc.

Remember, this young author is the one who created an award winning Rubik's cube solver! Some of the predator-prey code is done so elegantly that the military drone types will probably be looking at it-- in advanced work these sims require graduate school level differential equations, yet this inventor does it with minimilist code that High Schoolers and self taught hobbyists get right away! As long as your "prey" has a signature (eg IR), you're good to chase and eat with your voracious T Rex.

Part of the value you don't get in any other book is that the writer is a true inventor both mechanically and codewise, and you can see his practical experience on every page of shortcuts, wisdoms and rules of thumb you can use even in the most advanced robotics. A "solver" mind can write 5 lines of Haskell that will solve any Sudoku puzzle, while other more imperative coders take over 40 lines of Java. In robotics, with memory always at a premium even in those that run Linux, authors like this with real world accomplishments don't teach you a bunch of techniques you have to unlearn later, and get you and your students/ kids/ grandkids on the right track from day one, even with the physics, mechanical engineering and math. The "comic book" adds really give you a break from the plentiful "parts" mechanical illustrations and programming action throughout.

Takes a high school level mind to get most of it, and undergrad for some of the advanced concepts, but any intelligent layperson can get these done with K-12 "helpers." I don't know about Italy, but shop classes in the US are virtually gone (like sports programs are going!), so Lego Mindstorms is one of the few "STEM" courses that can hide out as math, science and engineering yet still teach numerous practical mechanical techniques, gears, angles, etc. while having real FUN.

Highly recommended, at the top of my top 5 list in this subject area, whether you're a hobbyist, teacher, student, or professional robotocist. GREAT adjunct gift with an MS purchase too-- I wouldn't invest in an MS kit without this book! AND if you don't have the $350 to shell out on an MS right now (who does today?), the "wisdom" of the code and projects (although not the specific mechanics, as the numerous illustrations are obviously MS) also work for parallax, robobasic and many other projects that require less investment. Some more advanced libraries are offering MS as a checkout item also, although the last one I got for one of my kids was an earlier version than this text covers, yet still 90% applicable.

A few page number references for the above topics (NOTE: this book is literally FILLED with illustrations, so don't worry if the text topics seem complex, the author takes painstaking time to illustrate everything from component builds to screen shots to a complete in-book comic! There also are little "Digging Deeper" boxes that explain advanced concepts.

There are FAR more illustrations than there is text, even though the breadth of topics is amazing). PAGES-- Brick connect to PC where needed: 75; Remote control programming: 240; Hunting prey with your T-rex (an infrared target): 376 (includes seek and chase blocks and teaches basic state priorities and transitions); power vs. speed: 297; Pythagorean theorem vs. lego angles: 261; actuator/motor speed regulation: 188; Patrolling a room on two legs with block alone (no pc needed): 131; Using math blocks directly: 95; Keeping distances in any room (wall following w/ IR): 64; Logic operators and De Morgan's laws (of logic): 373. Many more features, and nearly an entire second book is online on half a dozen of the author's and publisher pages, generally in the benedetelli dot com series, enjoy!

Essential Resource For Kids Of All Ages Who Want To Understand How Things Work

First of all a caveat: I do not work for Amazon, LEGO or No Starch Press, and I'm not related to the author. I'm a 63 year old kid who was weaned on Tinker Toys and Erector sets. I enjoy building things, can follow instructions and use a computer, and am innately curious about how the things I build actually work. I bought this book to better understand how the EV3 robots actually work, both mechanically and programatically, and have found it to be extremely useful.

Thus far I've built and programmed the first four robots (Chapters 1-14). I had no problem following the monochromatic instructions, although an ebook in full color is now available via No Starch Press.

The most interesting part for me is the clear explanation of how the programming blocks work, both singly and in combination. I didn't find the information on programming via the EV3 Brick App to be particularly useful--I suspect that most users will program on their PCs--however, you don't have to know any programming language to replicate and modify the programs which are richly illustrated. And those not interested in programming at all can simply download the programs from the author's website. The entire book is organized with just enough information for everyone--from those interested in making the robots "come alive" to those desiring a deeper understanding so they can create and activate whatever their imaginations can conceive.

A bonus: If you get stuck along the way you can email the author for guidance. He's already helped me on two occasions which has both improved my understanding and fueled my enthusiasm. And there's no charge!

I recommend this book to everyone, young and old. Almost makes me wish I was back in high school taking a robotics class. Well, almost.......................

A great introduction to the newest LEGO robotics system!!

The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Laboratory is a book that makes a few assumptions of the reader: 1. The reader is new to LEGO building, 2. The reader is new to programming, and 3. The reader probably doesn't have a computer.

With over 400 pages, Daniele gives the reader an introduction to all the above, in an informative and fun narrative. The framing device for the book is comic of a boy becoming an apprentice to the scientist (Daniele's alter ego), making the book accessible to young readers. However, adults will find a tremendous amount of useful information when reading the book.

I learned a lot, including building with TECHNIC elements (which are in the MINDSTORMS sets and are constructed differently from the well-known LEGO brick) and more importantly, using gears. The building guide on gears in this book is clear and easy to understand, and also one of the first guides of its type I have seen in print.

Programming is also explained in a clear fashion - while the book deals with the programming that can be done on the brick directly (a new MINDSTORMS feature), it also touches on programming from its computer application. Again, this is the first book I have seen with a guide to on-brick programming, and it's easy to figure out with the illustrations shown.

The instructions and models are interesting, with each showing a different building concept. Things like biped (two-legged) walking and line following are explained to the builder as a model is built. Ideas for going beyond the programming are also included, so this allows the reader to explore further.

With all of this information, I strongly recommend this book for not only LEGO builders interested in MINDSTORMS robotics, but also FIRST LEGO teams to learn about building techniques and especially gearing. I would also recommend the digital version too, so its info is always close at hand while building!

The Euro-Crisis and the legal and institutional responses to it have had important constitutional implications on the architecture of the European Union (EU). Going beyond the existing literature, Federico Fabbrini's book takes a broad look and examines how the crisis and its aftermath have changed relations of power in the EU, disaggregating three different dimensions: (1) the vertical relations of power between the member states and the EU institutions, (2) the relations of power between the political branches and the courts, and (3) the horizontal relations of power between the EU member states themselves.

The first part of the book argues that, in the aftermath of the Euro-crisis, power has been shifting along each of these axes in paradoxical ways. In particular, through a comparison of the United States, Fabbrini reveals that the EU is nowadays characterized by a high degree of centralization in budgetary affairs, an unprecedented level of judicialization of economic questions, and a growing imbalance between the member states in the governance of fiscal matters. As the book makes clear, however, each of these dynamics is a cause for concern - as it calls into question important constitutional values for the EU, such as the autonomy of the member states in taking decision about taxing and spending, the preeminence of the political process in settling economic matters, and the balance between state power and state equality. The second part of the book, therefore, devises possible options for future legal and institutional developments in the EU which may revert these paradoxical trends. In particular, Fabbrini considers the ideas of raising a fiscal capacity, restoring the centrality of the EU legislative process, and reforming the EU executive power, and discusses the challenges that accompany any further step towards a deeper Economic and Monetary Union.

He is the author of four edited volumes and two monographs, including Fundamental Rights in Europe: Challenges and Transformations in Comparative Perspective (Oxford University Press, 2014).

Gr 3–7—This sensitively crafted picture book offers a glimpse into the life and work of Japanese poet Kaneko (1903–30). Accompanied by colorful, soft illustrations, the first half recounts Kaneko's short life along with a selection of her poems that thematically complement the text. The second half is a larger (also illustrated) collection of her poems in English and Japanese. Young Misuzu is described as a sensitive, inquisitive child; her family encouraged her love of reading and education. When she was 20, her first poems were published and were well received. She would go on to write more than 500 poems. The narrative covers the many challenges Kaneko faced. (She committed suicide at the age of 26.) Framing Kaneko's life story is the account of Setsuo Yazaki, who worked tirelessly to track down and preserve her poetry after it fell into obscurity. Kaneko's brief poems express kinship with the world: sleepy telephone poles, fish, grieving orphaned whale calves, and more. Poems like "The Cicada's Clothes" and "Dewdrop" convey a childlike sense of wonder: "Let's not tell anyone./In the corner of the garden this morning,/a flower shed a tear." Even in translation, her work has an elegant simplicity and clarity. VERDICT This wonderfully illustrated book stresses the positive legacy of Kaneko's tragic life. About the Author

Misuzu Kaneko was born in 1903 in Senzaki, Japan. She rose to fame as a celebrated author of children’s poems. After her death, her poems fell into obscurity for decades, until the 1970s when Setsuo Yazaki discovered and published her full body of work in Japanese. This is the first English-language biography and collection of her poetry to be distributed in English.

David Jacobson has a BA in East Asian Studies from Yale University and an MBA from NYU. In 1984-5 he attended the Inter-University Center for the Study of the Japanese Language (the "Stanford Center"). From 1987-9 he received a Mombusho scholarship to study at Hitotsubashi University. His news articles and TV scripts have been published widely in print, online, and broadcast media in the US and Japan, appearing in the Associated Press, The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, The Japan Times, and on NHK and CNN. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

Sally Ito holds a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and an MA in English from the University of Alberta. She received a Mombusho scholarship to study at Waseda University, where she worked on literary translations of modern and contemporary Japanese poetry. She has taught writing at several universities and has reviewed children's books for the Paper Tigers blog. She is the author of several volumes of poetry, including Alert to Glory, and her 1998 story collection Floating Shore won the Writers Guild of AB Book Award. She lives in Winnipeg, Canada.

Toshikado Hajiri is a graphic artist and illustrator in Tokushima, Japan. After graduating from Ritsumeikan University in international relations and working at a trading company, in 2009 he decided to pursue his love for painting full-time by becoming an illustrator. His work has appeared in school textbooks, advertisements, calendars, and in several children’s picture books. He was awarded 2nd prize in the 2006 International Illustration Competition sponsored by the Japan Illustrators' Association. His illustrations for Are You an Echo? will be his first for international publication.

Michiko Tsuboi is a graduate of Doshisha Women's College where she majored in English literature.�She also attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she studied and read Canadian literature in English.�She has worked professionally as a translator and English teacher in Shiga, Japan for many years.

This book is a delightful "mash-up" of poetry, biography and illustration that artfully draws out the child in each of us.

What a delightful book! David Jacobson tells the tragic yet inspiring story of Misuzu Kaneko's life to weave together this popular Japanese poet's sublime verses into a captivating narrative. Misuzu wrote poetry from a young age and committed suicide at age 26 driven by a husband who mistreats her and threatens to take away her daughter. Yet, magically, the book goes beyond that sadness to capture the richness of her life and art. Each poem, masterfully translated by Sally Ito and Michiko Tsuboi, is accompanied by stunning illustrations by Toshikado Hajiri. I'm not a great reader of poetry, but I swallowed this book in one sitting, relishing the fresh perspective of the poems and pictures like a plate of the best sushi, enjoying the special texture, color and taste of each exquisite piece. The poetry has such depth and empathy for nature, whether human, insect or inanimate, it's no wonder that Japan, battered by a horrific earthquake in 2011, found comfort and hope in Misuzu's poetry a century after it was written. This is a book for children as well as adults; for students of Japan as well as students of human nature; for lovers of literature as well as lovers of poetry; for philosophers as well as artists. I read it before dinner and again afterward. Now I want to go back and enjoy it at my leisure.

Was looking forward to read "To the brighter side, to the brighter side"

This book contains stories of Tsunami 2011, and explain relation to the poems but I really wonder why this one doesn't contains famous poem
" To the brighter side, to the brighter side"?!
It's like one of the most popular poems of her, which expresses her life..
Over all her poems sound a little childish, idk if people can understand the real meanings of her poems when it's translated in English but if you're thinking about to buy one for your kids, it maybe a good idea

Confusing

The book itself is beautiful but does have a chemical smell. Not a new book smell. The story of the writer's suicide after contracting venereal disease from an abusive husband which is written into the book makes it an odd book to fit to a group. It looks like a children's book but suicide and VD would argue otherwise.

About the Author
Janice Thompson earned her Ph.D. at Arizona State University in exercise science with an emphasis in exercise physiology and nutrition. She is currently a professor in the School of Sports and Exercise Sciences at The University of Birmingham, U.K. Her work in the United Kingdom focuses on developing nutrition and physical activity interventions to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes in high-risk populations. Janice has retained her U.S. affiliation as a nutrition and exercise research consultant with the Office of Native American Diabetes Programs at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

Janice is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a member of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), and The Nutrition Society. Janice won an undergraduate teaching award while a faculty member at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.

Janice publishes two other nutrition books with Pearson: the higher-level majors text, The Science of Nutrition (just published in its 3rd edition), and the consumer-level book, Nutrition for Life, Third Edition. In addition, Janice co-authored Sport Nutrition for Health and Performance, with Melinda Manore (published by Human Kinetics).

Melinda Manore earned a doctorate in human nutrition with a minor in exercise physiology at Oregon State University, and a master’s degree in health education from the University of Oregon. She is currently a professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences at Oregon State University, where she teaches and conducts research in the area of nutrition and exercise. Before coming to Oregon State, she taught at Arizona State University for 17 years. Melinda’s areas of specialization include nutritional requirements and issues for active women, nutrition assessment, and the role that nutrition and exercise play in health, energy balance, obesity, and disordered eating.

A registered dietitian, Melinda is an active member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). She is Past Chair of the ADA Research Committee and the Research DPG (Dietetic Practice Group). Melinda is a member of the American Society of Nutritional Sciences (ASNS), the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN), the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO), the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Military Nutrition Research, and a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Melinda writes a nutrition column for and is an associate editor for ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal, and she has won numerous awards for excellence in research and teaching. While at Arizona State University, she was nominated for the Distinguished Mentor of Women Award (1996), and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award (1998, 2000). In 2001, she received the SCAN Excellence in Practice Award.

Melinda co-authored The Science of Nutrition, Third Edition with Janice Thompson and Linda Vaughan; Nutrition for Life, Third Edition with Janice Thompson; and co-authored the Human Kinetics title Sport Nutrition for Health and Performance with Janice.

Tons of worth-while information that is worth knowing!

It was optional to have this for my online fundamental of human nutrition class this semester, but I'm so glad that I went ahead and got it. There is so much straight-forward information packed into this book and it is very informative. Unlike other boring textbooks, this one is filled with information that is actually relative to everyone's life and it isn't boring to read.

it came quickly with all the pages, and since I needed it for my major, i ended up buying it. Some things the class doesn't teach you later on are in here, such as 'diets' and planning to eat for pregnancy.

My book skips from page 370 to 403, without any tears in the book, the pages are just nonexistent. So when assigned to read chapter ten, I am going to fail.
