Whatever one may think about the rights and wrongs of colonial rule, it is hard to deny that during the first half of the this century those African countries, which then came under British administration enjoyed a period of stability which most now look back upon with a profound sense of loss. Paradoxical though it may seem, one of the bulwarks of that stability was each country’s indigenous army. Trained and officered by the British, these force became a source of both pride and cohesion in their own country, none more so than the King’s African Rifles. founded in 1902 and probably the best known of the East African forces.
In this, the first complete history of the East African forces, Malcolm Page, who himself served in the Somaliland Scouts for a number of years, has had access to much new material while researching the history of each unit from it’s foundation to the time of independence.
Historians in several fields will be grateful to him for having put on record this very important period in the annals of both Great Britain and East Africa while the memories of many who served there were still fresh, and they themselves will perhaps be most grateful of all for this lasting tribute to the men they served and who served them, for in that shared sense of duty lay the true spirit of East African Forces.

Regimental History - King's African Rifles

This is an excellently researched and well compiled history of the King's African Rifles. The author has been most diligent in including the detail of the history of the various battalions - and the other associated units from the region. For the most part, however, the reminiscences of former officers have been dredged to produce only the principal facts of the subject, and few of the personal views. Additionally, few of the British soldiers and even fewer of the African soldiers appear to have been consulted, which is a terrible pity, as I know that many had vivid personal accounts to be told, and which are now probably lost. From personal knowledge, a number of the years from WWII onwards would have benefitted tremendously from such consultation - in 1996 I met an mzee from the Pare area southeast of Moshi who told me some of the tales from his days in Burma. Sadly, most of those men are now gone. It must be accepted that there will always be this sort of limitation on any Regimental history; they tend to be written by the most senior of figures involved, and are usually very glossy where glory is concerned, opaque where less honourable deeds and attitudes in their particular circles are concerned. A much larger and better-annotated photographic account must also surely have been available. Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly recommend this account to anyone interested in the history of East Africa as one which can be largely trusted, while contemporary revisionism in the region is increasingly distorting the truth of those years.

Malcolm Page's book "King's African Rifles: A History" is the 2011 reprint of "A History of The King's African Rifles and East African Forces" published in 1998. This book is an absolute must own for the African military history enthusiast.
The King's African Rifles (KAR) was a multi-battalion British colonial regiment raised from the various British possessions in East Africa from 1902 until independence in the 1960s. It performed both military and internal security functions within the East African colonies as well as external service. Rank and file were Africans called askaris, while most officers were seconded from British Army regiments. When raised there were some Sudanese officers in the Uganda-raised battalions and towards the end of British colonial rule African officers were commissioned in the various battalions.
The Imperial British East Africa Company raised units of askaris from among the Swahili people, the Sudanese and Somalis. There was no official uniform, nor standardized weaponry. Many of the askaris campaigned in their native dress. Officers usually wore civilian clothes. From 1895 the British askaris were organized into a regular, disciplined, uniformed force called the East African Rifles, later part of the King's African Rifles. The designation of "askari" was retained for locally recruited troops in the King's African Rifles, smaller military units and police forces in the colonies until the end of British imperial rule in Kenya, Tanganyika and Uganda during the period 1961-63.
Overall, this is excellently written and sourced work for the professional historian.
