If you need a quick story with a message

As a public speaker I enjoyed reading these stories and thought as I read them how I might use them in my presentations. Some I had heard before, but most I had not. If you need some sort of lesson to be learned sort of story, this little book has 99 of them.

A cure for inaction

In the introduction to "How To Build a Switching Layout" Lance Mindheim tells his readers; "More than anything else one of the key goals of this book is to isolate and prioritize the tiny handful of very simple techniques that make a dramatic difference in the appearence of a layout." In this respect the book should be considerd an overwhelming success. By faithful adherence to this goal, Lance Mindheim has created a book that can serve as both a step by step single project "how to" manual, and a teaching aid for a unique style of modeling.

This is achieved through the example layout "The Palmetto Spur", which is used to demonstrate Lance's techniques and modeling philosophy. I have read countless articles, and books over the years concerning layout design and construction. All were possesed of good information and ideas but none I have read have done such a thorough job of telling the reader what they need to know. The "Palmetto" spur layout can serve a s a project into itself, or the reader could modify it to suit their own desires, or incorporate the techniques and ideas to build something on a much grander scale.

As someone who has long put off building my first layout I can relate to Lance's early statement that many modelers are overwhelmed with the "mountains of information" available in print and on the internet. This book gave me a simple and achievable project, and a complete step by step plan for construction. After years of inaction, this book inspired me to act.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in layout construction, but it is particularly helpful for someone seeking to build there first layout.

The "must have" book if you are building a switching layout

Lance Mindheim has done an excellent job of outlining the process of building a shelf style switching layout in this latest book. Lance is well known in the hobby for his excellent modeling and simplistic layout designs and he demonstrates that a simple layout can be very fulfilling. In How To Build A Switching Layout he covers all the basics including building a simple style of bench work, laying the track, wiring the layout, scenery, and building structures. His encouraging writing style and numerous photographs demonstrate the process in great detail. In addition, he covers the "difference makers" that make a good layout look great. This book is a "must have" for anyone considering building a switching layout for the first time and even the experienced modeler will pick up many good tips.

A great model railroad book for new and experienced modelers

I received Lance's new book a couple of weeks ago and like his previous ones, this is one a prototype modeler needs on his shelf.

We all have our ways of building and detailing layouts and many of you here, are the leaders of the hobby. But to go along with your expertise I would suggest adding his books to your library. These books and this one in particular are filled with simple techniques that can transform a basic trackplan into a nice operating layout with really good, simple scenery which ANYONE no matter their space, finances or skills can build and operate.

While John Armstrong, Tony Koester, Bill Darnaby, Jim Six, Tom Johnson, Marty McQurick, Clark Probst and others have shown us how to design and build really great layouts, Lance takes this a step further to encourage not only new folks but veterans in the hobby to get off their "caboose" and get started on a small, realistic, nice looking layout they can be proud of. Forget about complicated helix construction, don't stay up late at night worrying about enough staging tracks and you don't need a gym with a cast of thousands of operating folks to build and operate a great layout. Grab this book, enjoy a quick read and then head for your hobby store, Home Depot or Lowes to get supplies and get building. Quit procrastinating and dreaming about building a perfect layout. Get in there, build it, learn from any mistakes and start really enjoying the hobby. This is the football season and with that in mind, a lot of us need to get off the sidelines and into the game. By the way, why not grab someone new to the hobby or a veteran who has gone "stale" and have them join you in this adventure. It's always a lot more fun to make mistakes and learn how to resolve problems together rather than just by your self.

Lance's books are a great start to a great layout.

This book, while somewhat dated (written while Stalin still ruled), is still frighteningly accurate and applicable to events unfolding even now. I found it difficult to read only in the sense that I did not want to believe that words written a few years before I was born could still so accurately portray the world and events that I see today.

As Relevant Today as it Was in 1951

This is a 60+ year-old book that retains its fascination because the varieties of ‘true believers’ persist, along with the results of radical actions. Essentially, Hoffer looks at multiple, seemingly heterogeneous movements, from Christianity to National Socialism and observes their leadership and, more important, their followers. He identifies the traits of those leaders and followers and records them in a succession of discussions—125 numbered divisions in a book of approximately 170 pp.

While he has done his homework in examining the movements he does not discuss one or a handful in depth. This is not historiography. It is more a collection of observations that flow from his own readings in history. With the large number of separate discussions the result is something like reading Pascal or Wittgenstein. One is presented with many unified discussions but the most powerful aspect of the book is the manner in which it breaks into single, quotable sentences. These are the rocks polished by the river of thought which preceded them.

For example:

p. 14: “Faith in a holy cause is to a considerable extent a substitute for the lost faith in ourselves.”

p. 24: “. . . the character and destiny of a group are often determined by its inferior elements.”

p. 29: “It is not actual suffering but the taste of better things which excites people to revolt.”

p. 33: “Those who clamor loudest for freedom . . . often . . . want to eliminate free competition and the ruthless testing to which the individual is continually subjected in a free society.”

p. 116: “There can be no mass movement without some deliberate misrepresentation of facts.”

p. 133: “However much the protesting man of words sees himself as the champion of the downtrodden and injured, the grievance which animates him is, with very few exceptions, private and personal.”

p. 144: “Whence come the fanatics? Mostly from the ranks of the noncreative men of words.”

Ultimately, this is a phenomenological study of human behavior in mass movements. Its key, overarching theme is the notion that the true believer suffers from some personal form of alienation or failure which pushes him to seek an alternative society in which he can comfortably fit. This is powerful stuff, endlessly suggestive and continuing in its relevance for our present condition. Highly recommended.

An interesting way of viewing and sorting out the similarities and differences in historical popular movements. Surprisingly, the far left and the far right can be indistinguishable from each other from the viewpoint of what it's like to live under them. Hoffer compares the personality types and motivations common to both movements resulting in highly predictable behavior and social results. From religion to politics the paradigm holds true; the human experience is usually optimal when common sense rules. You would do well to read the book as it expresses these ideas much better than I do. The proof of the thesis lies in the fact that the book, written in the 1950's, was correct in it's predictions over the last sixty five years. This way of thinking helps to envision the results of today's decisions.

YOU HAVEN'T MET AUSTRALIA TILL YOU'VE MET THIS

The old hero-story, thoughtfully retold, is always nourishing to read, but Wrightson offers us more: a first-class hero-cycle that is deeply, soul-quickeningly Australian. Wirrun is a young mid-20th-century Aboriginal man advancing to apotheosis (indeed) through encounter not only with the Aboriginal peoples of the "old south land" but also with the spirits who are themselves the land's oldest dreamings. Till I met them in Wrightson (a white Australian woman) these out-breathings of Australian presence were hidden to me. If bringing them forward in fiction like this involved a measure of cultural risk (I'm waiting on a ruling on that from the Aboriginal mate I bought this copy for), I, for one, can only be grateful. Profoundly respectful of the people whose lore constitutes so much of her material, she also loves them -- and shows it by enrolling Wirrun as a first-class member of that mighty, immemorial and global company that "climbs the rugged track to hero" on behalf of all of us, Australian or not, Aboriginal or not, man and woman alike.

About the Author
Belverd E. Needles, Jr., received his BBA and MBA degrees from Texas Tech University and his PhD degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing at DePaul University, where he is an internationally recognized expert in international accounting and education. He has published in leading journals and is the author or editor of more than 20 books and monographs. His current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. His textbooks are used throughout the world and have received many awards, including (in 2008) the McGuffey Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. Active in many academic and professional organizations, he is immediate past vice president-education of the American Accounting Association. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech University, the Illinois CPA Society Outstanding Educator Award and its Life-Time Achievement Award, the Joseph A. Silvoso Faculty Award of Merit from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the Ledger & Quill Award of Merit, and the Ledger & Quill Teaching Excellence Award. He was named Educator of the Year by the American Institute of CPAs, Accountant of the Year for Education by the national honorary society Beta Alpha Psi, and Outstanding International Accounting Educator by the American Accounting Association. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from DePaul University.

Marian Powers received her B.S. degree from Chicago State University and her Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, she has taught financial accounting at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Internationally recognized as a dynamic teacher in executive education, she specializes in teaching nonfinancial managers how to read and understand internal and external financial reports, including the impact of international financial reporting standards (IFRS). Her current research relates to international financial reporting, performance measurement, and corporate governance of high-performance companies in the United States, Europe, India, and Australia. She has also coauthored three interactive multimedia software products. She currently serves on the Board of the CPA Endowment Fund of Illinois and is immediate past-chair of the Board of Governors of the Winnetka Community House. Excellent but not for the beginner

I used this Textbook in my MBA Financial Accounting course at DePaul Unversity in Chicago, IL. I had very little knowledge of the topic before I took this class.
This book is well written, well organized, and is not too wordy. Because of the depth of this book and its brevity, every sentence is important and I found I had to reread chapters about three times before I really understood the material.
I did notice a few minor typos in the chapter exercises, but for the most part I found it extremely accurate.
This is a difficult subject and this book covers much material. Each chapter must be read carefully. To fully understand the material, I highly encourage doing the exercises in the back of each chapter. Houghton Mifflin has the answer keys in Excel files on their web site, but you need a password to get it.
I can understand the person who found this book confusing. I don't think this book is great for somebody new to the subject. But after getting your feet wet in the subject, this is an excellent text.
This book will make a wonderful reference for years to come. In fact, my father, a small business owner wants my copy.

Pretty darn good, but a bit overwhelming for the beginner.

I used this book for my Financial Accounting I course I took this past Spring working towards my Bachelors degree. This was in the first accounting course and I really didn't know too much about accounting beforehand. While the book overall is a good text and full of helpful information and examples, the first chapter or two were totally useless because they approached accounting pragmatically and tried to cover too many fundamentals too soon. Accounting is not an easy subject and theres no easy way to get started with it. However, my professor (who had used the book before) skipped over the first couple chapters and taught us the fundamentals using her own method which did work very well and then the rest of the book made more sense. At times it seems the book might cover a topic or circumstance in only one or two sentences and then will have a problem or two that deal more extensively with that short concept. The only reason I could think they did this was to stimulate creativity and learning and force the student to figure out how to mold the various principles to fit a particular "new" situation rather than just have you memorize some rules. Some might not like this method...
