Not my kind of story.

I found this to be a very complicated book. It did not seem to make much of a point in spite of all the intricate details. Unless I missed something, lots of details were left as loose ends. As the 3 stars indicate, it was okay, but not any more than that. The author has talent, but it was not the kind of story I enjoy reading.

Keeping up with the multiple story lines as the narrative moved back and forth took a little effort, but after the last page I found myself still wanting more. Nice job!

Sad to reach the end....

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. A young man wants to leave his small Scottish village and travel. The book switches between his current travel experiences and the past he is revisiting in his travels. The characters are easy to get involved with. I enjoyed the fact that I was not always able to guess what the next page would bring.

For me the highest praise is when I'm done with a book and I get upset to find out there is no sequel. I'm hoping David Harris Wilson will decide to follow the characters as they continue their lives.

Good Old-Fashion Space Opera

This was a change encounter, a plug on Instapundit, and one turned out to be quite a find. I've long been a fan of space opera, and this is a good one, reminiscence of David Webber's Honor Harrington novels. I quickly got hooked and have been hard pressed to put it down.

Mankind has left Earth to colonize the stars, and the majority of members of the Hegemony of Suns. But not all are, and at the periphery are other, smaller interstellar governments and independent systems. Of course, between the rare systems with habitable planets are lots of empty systems. Which leaves a lot space for pirates and their ilk to hide and harass the commercial shipping lanes.

When one cargo freighter of four ship convoy barely escapes the destruction that was the fate of her sister ships, the assault-ship Conquering Sun is sent to find and deal with the attackers in a barren system simply used a midpoint between FTL jumps between the inhabited worlds of the Hegemony and a resource-rich mining planet.

The author has done a good job with character development, and quickly found myself evolved with them. The science, as with most space operas, is a backdrop to the story, but plausible. Nothing that will make you stand up and say, "that's simply not possible", but also nothing that requires a physics background to fully grasp. (I still don't completely grasp the singularity string that traveled down the length of The Way in Greg Bear's Eon.) The author has done his research and credits his sources. (I haven't been there yet, but I will dropping by.)

Simply put, this is a great SF adventure, one that will keep you "turning the pages", to use pre-Kindle term. And it's only 99 cents!

For me, it just begs the questions, when is the next book coming out and when is the author coming to Libertycon?

Brilliant, Character-Driven Hard Science Fiction

What a satisfying book. Too often, science fiction fans are forced to choose between hard sci fi -- where the technological innovations are clever and all the math works, but the "characters" are so thin they make cardboard look like the Complete Works of Shakespeare -- or character-driven sci fi, where the people are three-dimensional and the dialog snaps, but the "science" makes Star Trek seem like a Ph.D. seminar in physics.

HEGEMONY makes the choice unnecessary in a singularly delightful fashion. The characters act like people, not plot devices, and by the end of the book I felt like I'd made some new friends (and a couple of enemies). Meanwhile, the starship battles might have been written by a time-displaced Patrick O'Brian.

I've been consciously vague about plot details, because a great deal of the fun of HEGEMONY is the surprising way in which the various pieces of the intricate (but propulsive and never dull) plot come together. I will say that Alekzandra Neel, the interceptor pilot mentioned in the official synopsis, is only one of several entertaining protagonists whose stories are expertly weaved together. Stalwart ship captains, sexy pirates, and sinister secret agents also make their appearances. And yet, the book makes a fine, cohesive whole, without undue meanderings or digressions.

OK, enough, lavishing of praise; I'm starting to sound like a paid shill. I really did read the book, I really did love it, and you will too. And, shoot, it's only 99 cents. Buy it!

When do we get a sequel?

I wasn't expecting a whole lot when I downloaded this book for $.99 after seeing it plugged on Instapundit, but it drew me in from the first page. I don't know that I've ever read a book that did a better job of rendering a plausible and exciting space battle, yet the characters really came alive as well. I've read a lot of full-price science fiction from big name authors that didn't nail that combination anywhere near as well as the author has here.

I particularly liked the clever plot twists and the way the alliances of convenience were presented. Even the disembodied "daemons" were done in a way that makes you speculate on exactly what it is that makes us human.

A masterful novel and I'll look forward to reading more of Mark Kalina's work in the future.

Getting Ahead Is Good For Getting Noticed

I have spent the last few weeks working through the pages of Joel A. Garfinkle's latest book, Getting Ahead - Three Steps to Take Your Career To The Next Level. I say "working" because this book is full of great insights, stories, and practical action steps one can take to move forward.

Garfinkle's model is simple and is divided into three parts: Improve your perception, Increase your visibility, and Exert your influence. But his methodology is not simplistic at all. If you want to develop your leadership and increase your odds of future success - you'll have some work to do. This book helps you know what kind of work that will entail.

Each section contains a wealth of anecdotes, quotes, and powerful questions for you to reflect and evaluate your own efforts. There are concise summations at the end of each section, along with a list to "Take Action Now." Each of these provides an important review to make sure you don't miss out on the key points Garfinkle is emphasizing. The book also provides a wide variety of charts and graphs, both to share important data and to demonstrate how concepts may relate to each other.

Overall, the book is a great guide to get you noticed within your workplace. I did wrestle a little bit with the author's depiction of a leader in the section on increasing one's visibility. While it was offered within the context of getting noticed and getting involved, I felt like it didn't leave much room for the quiet, behind-scenes-type leader who may lead with a more introvertive style rather than always being the one who is up front. I did appreciate how Garfinkle brought the concept of leadership up again later in the book as he related it to the level of one's influence. Influence becomes the means by which one advances to higher levels of responsibility and recognition within an organization or group.

Finally, one of the most helpful parts of the book, in my opinion, is the valuable guidance Garfinkle gives in improving one's perception (of you by others). At one point, he provides with ten specific steps you can take to "reinforce a positive perception and/or change a negative one." Some of the advice includes:

- Be assigned to highly visible projects at work.
- Educate management about what you do and what your position is in the company.
- Surround yourself with people whom others respect.
- Know the impact you have on others.
- And six others

I came away from this book greatly encouraged to take more responsibility for the impressions I make in my working environment. Good things aren't just going to magically fall in my lap. Most of the time, it will happen as the result of doing the right things. A lot of those right things are listed out in Joel Garfinkle's book.

Helpful Tools to Break Out!

A great concept that went just too long. Because I read this as part of The Twelve Books Club, and this was the September book choice, I have to say I read with a different agenda. My career is at a different place than many who may read this and so what I gained will certainly be different than a 30 some year old female trying to move forward in what has been a male world or a young male seeking to break out from a the shadows of a large corporate world. The PVI Model (Perception, Visibility and Influence) seems to be a sound foundation on which to move upward, and would seem a perfectly workable formula to break out and been seen and recognized. Just not in 250+ pages.

Having said that, I still enjoyed Joel Garfinkle's work. I enjoyed the many examples of how he helped countless of his clients implement the very work that he writes about here. With the influence of social media sites, starting with 'Perception' seemed perfect. Using social media, there is so much that we can do and so much we should never do to enhance and improve how others see us and therefore perceive us. Whether we like it or not, many important to our growth and advancement have an opinion of us and it is not always what we may think. Take to time to put the steps outlined in these chapters to work to help understand how others see you and effect the same. The other components of the PVI Model (V & I) begin here.

The other end of the 'Perception' stick is 'Visibility' and we may often hope that our work is seen and visible to more than a few that we immediately interact with on a day to day basis. I believe that too many of us come from the school that if we just work hard enough and do a good enough of a job that our work will speak for us and help us move up the advancement ladder. While in some career cultures it might, in many it won't and can't and here, Joel can help you stand out.

Of course if we feel that we are always lost in the shadow of those above us or around us, and have a harder time tooting our own horn, the third component, 'Influence', may help more than the others. I loved the story of Vince Lombardi, now an iconic part of the coaching profession. However, when he came to the Green Bay Packers in 1959 he was largely an unknown. Yet, as he staked out early his ability to influence his players and the franchise, what we see today is of course history.

A good book and I would recommend it to anyone wanting or needing to break out of the pack and stand out.

Invaluable advice good for leaders and entrepreneurs too

Getting Ahead is chock full of practical advice you can apply right away. Even if your career has come to a standstill, you can get it started again by applying the PVI model to get the competitive advantage you need. As a current entrepreneur who has used Joel's consulting services to help create a successful business, I find the advice he gives in his book about many issues such as effective self promotion, creating advocates, and seeking out projects with visibility, to be as valuable to my company, as it is for climbing the career ladder. Besides providing wonderfully concrete advice for your career, its a fantastic way to enhance your own business and marketing plan!

The book sets forth the definitions, contours, existence conditions, and particular cases for the H-function, then explores the properties and relationships among the Laplace, Fourier, Hankel, and other transforms. From here, the H-functions are utilized for applications in statistical distribution theory, structures of random variables, generalized distributions, Mathai’s pathway models, and versatile integrals. Functions of matrix argument are introduced with a focus on real-valued scalar functions�when the matrices are real or Hermitian positive-definite. The text concludes with important recent applications to physical problems in reaction, diffusion, reaction-diffusion theory and statistics, and superstatistics. Generalized entropies as well as applications in astrophysics are dealt with.
