About the Author

Evangelos Petroutsos has a M.Sc. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. For more than two decades he has been involved in the design and implementation of business software and has authored many books and numerous articles on programming topics. He has extensive experience with GIS systems and spatial databases and has worked extensively with Google Maps since version 2 of the API implementing map-enabled sites. Currently he is involved in a GIS project for a gas utility company.

The Definitive Book on Google Map Programming

I have purchased six previous books on Google Maps in order to learn how to design either a web interface to display my own annotated maps or hopefully a separate application to do plotting on a map. All of that was in vain because the previous books focused on the simple use of Google Maps or on putting markers on a map. They were highly disappointing to me.

Finally, a definitive guide to using, programming, and interactive drawing has arrived with this book!
Chapter:
1. Introduction to mapping presentations and Google's choices.

2. Designing web pages with embedded maps, event handling, and markers. Most books stop here in their introductions.

3. Javascript programming. A very competent introduction to using Javascript and HTML to display maps.

4. Advanced Javascript programming. Here the deeper details of getting Javascript to work interactively and in depth.

5. This is where it begins, the Google API laid out for your use. Make Google Maps jump up and do your bidding.

6. Embedding maps in desktop Apps. Here is the "Holy Grail" of mapping operations. This is where you get to own the treasure and get Google to run at the heart of your very own design. It's about time. Imagine being able to get the map you want to display, mark it up with path traces, geodesic traces, and compare multiple route lengths and travel time using your own database. Well, its all right here.

7. Markers: Using them intelligently and inventing a few of your own.

12. Adding GIS Features to Mapping Applications: Building the full featured mapping application. A galary of useful items including comparing distances from files and making correct database querys for map items.

13. Spacial Databases and SQL Queries: You're going to need this if you want to any serious geodesic mapping requests on the web. The sum of map information out there would fill up several terabytes of drives. It's much better to ask for what you need when you need it. You will find that PostGreSQL and SQL server have the best datatypes for spacial data management.

14. Marker Clustering: Just one lesson here, don't overload your maps with markers.

15. Web Services: Or how and where to get special data for your maps.

16. Map Annotation: How and where to place map labels. Useful for general map recognition.

17. Geocoding and Direction APIs: If you want to produce travel direction maps, this is the heart of the process.

18. Visualizing Large Datasets: Beware, there is where you can get lost in the vastness of amorphous data returns.

19. Animating Items on the Map: How to move the markers and make your map come alive.

20. Advanced Javascript Animation: Now make the map tell the story in multiple motions. Do you want your airplane paths arc across the world and criss-cross each other as in "Rise of Planet of the Apes" or do you want to plot satellite tracks or show Superman circling the Earth in multiple tracks? Then read this chapter and use the information to make your own movie.

If you need to spend any time working with Google Maps and programming your own web site or application buy this book. Everything you might want to do is in here and remember; your time is worth a lot.

The Missing Manual

This is an excellent book that covers all aspects of the Google Maps API, from basic markers all the way to heatmaps, symbols and animation. It also includes related topics such as KML and SQL Spatial. Most importantly, this book doesn't rehash the documentation; it demonstrates topics with practical applications. Sure the author shows how to place markers on a map, but also explains how to list the same markers in a table alongside the map. Later in the book you will find an application that bypasses the default info windows of Google Maps and displays data about the selected marker on a floating window on top of the map. The chapter on placing lines and polygons on the map goes even further and includes an application that allows users to draw shapes on the map with the mouse. Beginners may prefer a few statements that demonstrate a specific feature, but if you're developing mapping applications ("map-enabled" applications according to the author) you will eventually write code to perform complicated tasks. Context menus is an example that comes to mind, because the author seems to like them. In short, the book delivers what the title promises.

The author is experienced in cartography and has packed a lot of information regarding geodesics and the Mercator projection in a single chapter. It's a great chapter that I enjoyed very much (and the basic reason I post this review).

Impressively accessible book

I've been interested in GIS but had no idea how much functionality is exposed by the Google Maps API. While reading this book I've been learning everything from embedding maps on my web site, to in-depth topics such as storing and accessing geospatial data. Being a little rusty in Javascript I am also pleased that the author included two chapters devoted to Javascript and even a chapter explaining Javascript-based animation. Best of all are the sample applications, which are not only useful themselves but provide clear insight into exactly how you program using the API, and serve as a model for my own applications. Mr Petroutsos leads me every step of the way, making even the most daunting topics accessible. I highly recommend this book and after this experience I will be looking for other works by Mr. Petroutsos, given his talent with tutorials and reference books like this one.

By 2014, he had discovered enough to publish The Secret History of the New World Order. Later the same year, he also published Secret Science and the Secret Space Program based on other researches. A good expose of CIA crimes and terrorism.

CIA: Crime Incorporated of America is fascinating reading! Not only does Herbert Dorsey give a historical outline of the powerful and secret organizations behind the creation and operation of the CIA, he makes a powerful case that the CIA is actually secretly, run from the Vatican rather than the U.S. Presidency. If the U.S. President ran the CIA, President John F. Kennedy would never have been assassinated.
Many, including myself, have already known that the CIA assassinates people and traffics in illegal narcotics, as many other researchers have written many books on this subject. This book gives even more detail while naming names of the people and criminal organizations involved. However, even worse, Herbert Dorsey demonstrates that the CIA also secretly backs terrorist groups to carry out their covert agendas, as they did in Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Libya and now Syria. ISIS is just another CIA operation.
This book is recommended reading for those of you that want to know what is really going on with our secret government.

What is going on inside the CIA

very well written and researched, reads like a Dan Brown novel, hard to put down once I started reading it. Very exciting reading. I have always know that there are secret agendas, but Herbert has shown me what really is going on inside governments and their secret agencies. This is no conspiracy theory but the truth of what is going on. A must read for anybody who wants to know the truth.

Get moving and get that project going

I've been a fan of the "Time management ninja" since I discovered his blog earlier this year. Each week there is a well written and useful article on some aspect of time organisation and improving productivity. The great thing is that the tips given are often useful in areas other than a business or work setting. The prevailing ethos is one to which I fully subscribe: that it is YOU that is at the centre of your success / failure and changing YOUR heart is the way to change your whole life. What seems to happen is that if you do this, then you will attract others to do the same and success is therefore "catching".
I like the way that it is aimed at ANYONE and not just those in a management setting
This book collects a number of the best of the motivational articles and is therefore unashamedly a collection of "articles". The book does not lose anything as a result. You can dip in or out as you please but there is no single narrative thread or constructed overall argument. Its strength lies in the fact that you can pick up anywhere and you do not need to read the whole book for it to make sense.
This is a factor I will bear in mind when I look to publish my collection of articles on Veterinary topics, a dream I have had for quite some time.......(see this book)
I'll be recommending this book to my colleague who is at the centre of such motivational work for our group. Normally when I write a review I tend to let out my pet niggles. I got through this book without having any.
Oh... and I need to design my annual Christmas card (I'll start it today!)

Bite sized tips for ramping up productivity

What I like about this is that the chapters are quick and easy to digest. The main point is made quickly and just as quickly illustrated with examples, so you don't have to make a major reading investment. Advice is constructive, but direct.

A list of reasons why being positive is beneficial? Awesome! I knew it's what people want, but now I know how I benefit from it too. A list of why I'm probably procrastinating, then a list of how I can get around it, and a list of possible roadblocks.

This book is the pep-talk to get you back into the ring, rather than the drawn out therapy sessions of other longer chapter books. The advice in here is highly non-technical, and geared toward people who are trying to lead productive lives. If a pep-talk on motivation might not be as useful for you as a therapy session, this probably isn't your book.

I couldn't put it down.

I read it in one sitting. It was a suspenseful and creepy story about a woman's worst fears and nightmares coming true when she is caught up in a twisted family. Anna has more fears than most folks, but she certainly has more presence of mind and grit than I would in her circumstances. The author's writing has elements of twilight Zone and Stephen King. I'll read all of her books.

Creepy and Twisted

I love creepy, twisted plots like this. It has the stomach clenching fright of the Hannibal Lector stories. Highly recommend this book. I've read and enjoyed several others Charlene Iverson books. What an imagination!

Suspense thriller with a horrific twist!

Good story with a few twists and turns. Anna Bennett is a nurse. Working nights at the hospital, Anna is nervous about strange things that happen, but her precautions aren't enough and Anna is going to find herself caught up in the strangest situation she can imagine. The author does a great job with this mystery suspense with a touch of twisted horror. I love her writing style and will be looking into more titles by an author that deserves to have readers checking into her works.

Quick, enjoyable suspense!

Suspense & thrillers have been one of many up and coming genres on my LOVE list. Heart pounding action, nail-biting anticipation and a mystery to unravel – I love it. Good young adult thrillers are few and far in between, and if here is one author that can write a good one – it’s Hannah Jayne.

From the very first page – we are thrust into action; having the opening scene the two boys in the woods and the attack. Hannah is an artist at creating these intense, heart pounding scenes that have me looking over my shoulder frequently.

I loved the alternating POV between Avery and Fletcher. Fletcher is having flash backs to that day – and with each time we get his POV we learn small bits about what had happened. Avery, the policy chief’s daughter – is determined to stick by Fletcher and help him figure out why he blocked out the incident.

I liked Avery and her determination to stick with Fletcher and find out what happened. There were times I thought her actions were pretty stupid – which is a common theme for me in this genre – but she was pretty resourceful and smart. Her dad trained her well. :)

It’s hard to really get into plot details because of spoilers – but how everything eventually pieced together was brilliant. There are a few things that did have me questioning, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. There are also things left unresolved, or unanswered if you will – but I love not knowing EVERYTHING. My only small issue was where it ended – I was hoping for an epilogue of some sorts. Yet at the same time – the story that was to be told was told. If that makes sense.

Overall – I quite enjoyed The Escape. I am 2-1 on Hannah’s novels and I can’t wait to dive into more of her works.

Chapter by Chapter's Review of The Escapte

The cover for author Hannah Jayne’s The Escape grabbed my attention but the novel’s premise hooked my intrigue. While it did sound like your basic amnesia/murder mystery story, I soon learned that The Escape by author Hannah Jayne was incredibly unique. The Escape was unlike most murder mysteries that I’ve had the opportunity to read. It was exciting and exhilarating and a total ride from start to finish.

In The Escape, Adam and Fletcher go into woods for a hike when they are both attacked. Uncertain of where they are or what is going on, it seems hopeless and unlikely that the two boys will find help. It isn’t until the Police Chief’s daughter, Avery, stumbles across Fletcher on a search party that the mystery of who attacked the two boys begins to unravel. When Adam is found murdered, both Fletcher and Avery begin to seek out just who it is that attacked them both. But as new information arises and strange flashbacks begin to haunt Fletcher, the killer’s true identity might be closer to the two of them than either of them know.

Honestly, I hadn’t expected myself to love The Escape was much as I did. I thought that it would be typical and average, but it turned out to be anything but. What immediately reeled me in was Jayne’s writing. There’s something about it that just works. It’s beautiful and descriptive. Readers will be able to imagine the setting with ease and find their hearts pounding often through Jayne’s use of descriptors and thoughtful prose. Her distinct style makes The Escape a wonderful read that takes hold of you and never lets go.

The point of view (POV) in The Escape switches between both Fletcher and Avery. It’s very interesting to live inside both characters’ heads. Mainly because both Fletcher and Avery have contrasting personalities that provide different insights into the story. Personally, I loved reading Fletcher’s POV. Jayne writes his character in a way that provides some major psychological implications. Fletcher isn’t ‘cool’ like Adam was. Fletcher is the less than average ‘weird kid’ and getting to see the story through his eyes was great.

If I were to describe The Escape to someone interested in reading, I would tell them that this novel is more than a murder mystery. It’s a psychological thriller than messes with your head. There’s a constant use of red herrings, making it impossible to fully know who the novel’s true antagonist is until its final pages. There are instances where you aren’t sure the force that Fletcher and Avery are up against is even human. It’s terrifying in the most spine-tingling way and I loved every moment of it.

I would recommend The Escape to readers who are big fans of murder mysteries with a twist. Any readers who are big fans of novels that are filled with nothing but heart-pounding action should definitely give The Escape a go. It’s a thrilling novel that you could easily finish in one sitting and will leave you breathless.

Not for me

Well, obviously, this author likes to write about things the MC can't remember and then they do. I thought The Escape was going to be different but it is as lame as The Dare. I'm going to have to remember the author's name so I don't pick another book by her.

So Fletcher and Adam go into the woods (as it seems to be woods in every YA town setting) and only one comes back alive. Fletcher is badly hurt and can't remember anything.

The entire book is about Fletcher having glimpses of what happened that night. And how many times did he black out? Jeeeezzz!

One thing good about this book is that Avery, the Chief of Police's daughter, went to his father to tell him about the rumors and everything she found out. Avery was not like other YA characters that take upon themselves to find out the killer.

A couple of cliches:

1) Fletcher was a weirdo, a nobody, but after the accident he becomes famous and students now love him and talk to him (if for a while).

2) Hot girls are flirting with Fletcher because he survived in the woods. Apparently, in YA literature there is something about a boy who almost died but didn't that arouses teenagers.

3) Fletcher's fame is short lived as now the entire high school thinks he is the one who killed his friend.

4) Is Fletcher happy he is alive? Of course not! That wouldn't be normal YA. He thinks he is the one who should've died because he is a nobody and Adam was the loved one.

*****Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers*****

Well, it turned out that Fletcher was indeed the one who killed Adam. And why? "because the voices made me do it." Yeap, the guy has schizophrenia. And where did that come from? Nowhere, really. Throughout the story we get glimpses of Fletcher hearing voices; but that could had been caused by the injuries he suffered in the woods.

By the way, who the hell injured Fletcher? If he killed Adam, who beat Fletcher half to death? Was it Adam defending himself? That was never explained.

Also, Fletcher has schizophrenia and he never had any symptoms. Nobody suspected anything but one day, out of the blue, he just killed Adam because of it.

At the end, Fletcher ask Avery to go into the woods with him to help him remember and she goes. Half way through their expedition, she feels things are not right as Fletcher is acting weird. So Avery keeps telling Fletcher "this is a mistake. We should go back." And "Let's go back" but never actually goes back (as always).

I personally didn't like this book. I finished to find out who had killed Adam, that was it. But I didn't feel anything at all for the characters or the story, and I wouldn't suggest it to avid readers as there's nothing substantial or worth noting here.

The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Thyroid�fine needle aspiration�is one of the most commonly performed cytologic procedures and is the standard diagnostic method for managing the patient with a thyroid nodule.� Until now, there has been no uniform system for reporting the results of thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the U.S.

The terminology�described in this book is an important advance in the field of cytopathology. It�represents the results of the multidisciplinary National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration State of The Science Conference, held in Bethesda, MD in October, 2007.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology will provide the reader with a unified approach to diagnosing and reporting thyroid FNA interpretations. It will serve as a reference guide not just for pathologists, but also endocrinologists, surgeons, and radiologists.

Where are the color pictures?

In a digital age is really a shame that this book's pictures are black & white. I thought that this thing was a feature from the past, when all books where b&W. They didn't take in consideration the i-pad and pc readers.

Pictures in black and white in a pathology book?! This is awful! I want my money back! Even the cover is black and white. How do you expect me to understand cytology with no colors at all?

buy the soft cover, not the kindle

from the reviews, it seems that the kindle edition is all still in black and white. i suggest buying the real book. the colors are crucial, and the minute detail are well seen on the actual book. I recommend this book for all students of pathology. It is written in the style of the first Bethesda book on cervical cytology.

For the serious scholar of theatre

This is not a collection of Tennessee Williams' plays. These are not condensed versions of his works for those too lazy to read.
This volume is for serious scholars of the works of Williams and the theatre. It will take you through detailed, thorough analysis of individual classic plays as well as periods of Williams' work. If you have questions about the psychological themes of Glass Menagerie, Streetcar, or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, this will take you into the mind of the playwright as well as content that may have been subconscious motivation. For the minor, one act plays, it will group them together in logical periods of the playwright's life and work to see the themes he dealt with as society changed.
Tennessee Williams was not merely among the greatest playwrights of his time, he was a pioneer ahead of his times. He took on themes and material that challenged society. His plays were so daring that studios often brought in Gore Vidal to 'clean up' his work for the Catholic Decency League who were not ready for the public to deal with his works.
