A great text in need of an update

My perspective is based on teaching a 100 student comparative anatomy course at the sophomore/junior level. This text is unique among comparative anatomy texts in its organization and approach. There are three sections to the text: 3 chapters on the SURVEY OF VERTEBRATE ANIMALS, the bulk of the text on THE PHYLOGENY AND ONTOGENY OF STRUCTURE, and a third portion, STRUCTURAL ADAPTATION. The material in this third section is usually dispersed throughout the presentation of body systems in other texts. Separation of the "structural adaptation" into a completely different section allows the instructor better flexibility in presentation, and it make the reading of the body systems more readable.

The bulk of the text on the evolution and development of organ systems is of the most concise of any text. This is particularity appropriate for a sophomore level course. Addition of the topics of a biomechanical nature in the latter part of the text enriches the students understanding, providing a more advanced perspective.

Two major drawbacks exist. First and foremost from a didactic point of view is the black and white illustration of the text. While the figures and illustrations ARE quite good, their lack of color makes this text less than attractive to students. While as one already educated in the topic of the text I find the illustrations useful, from the standpoint of a student these figures are forgettable and bland. Compare to any introductory biology or human anatomy & physiology text where the market for texts is strong, and this text looks to be 50 years old. The second downside to the text is its use of Linean nomenclature. Other texts in the market have gone to a cladistic approach and some (kardong) acknowledge linean nomenclature where appropriate but use predominantly cladistic nomenclature. While anyone can see the utility in using Linean nomenclature for the purposes of teaching undergraduate-level students, this system is not used in the modern literature and is flawed in its approach that ignores groupings based on common decent. Liem et al, for example, goes in an entirely different direction, using a strictly cladistic terminology and offers too much detail from my perspective. There must be some middle ground that allows one to incorporate modern terminology and phylogeny while still being accessible to the student.

All-in-all, a great text with a few kinks. Overall, I'd recommend this text to any student of comparative anatomy and their instructors. For those wanting a resource/reference for phylogenetic or ontological aspects of vertebrate evolution and structure there are better texts available.

This was a required text for my Comparative Anatomy course. My professor did align her syllabus sequentially with the text and some of the information was useful. The pictures were particularly good even though they were all in grayscale. The language used by the author was archaic and made the whole book difficult to read. As a graduate student, I understand that some of our language is esoteric, but this book was extremely verbose and antiquated in style. Final analysis: it covers all the bases but it is quite difficult to read.

About the Author
Hiroyuki Arai is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Yokohama National University. Dr. Arai serves as an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. He is the author of five books, over 130 journal papers, and more than 1,000 conference papers. He holds a B.E. in electrical and electronic engineering and an M.E. and D.E. in physical electronics, all from the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Author Arai, begins with a presentation of the definitions of basic terminology for both narrowband and wideband propagation measurements; and, also presents typical measurement systems and the parameters of measurement. Next, the author deals with the necessary measurement procedures for the mobile phone and mobile terminal antennas. Then, he presents the different kinds of phantoms and the techniques that are used to evaluate the influence of the human body on the antenna characteristics. In addition, the author describes the propagation estimation method for the base station siting for the cellular system; the method of the base station antenna design; and, the measurement method for the base station antenna. About the Author
Swami Lakshmanjoo was the last in an unbroken line of Kashmir Shaiva masters. As a boy his life was filled with a spiritual thirst to know and realize God. From a very early age he was filled with spiritual experiences. In fact these experiences were so intense that his parents thought he was suffering from hysteria. They were very concerned and approached their family guru, Swamiji's grand master Swami Ram, requesting him to help their son with his hysteria. Swami Ram laughed and said to them, "Don't worry, I should have such a disorder." As Swamiji grew older his desire to completely realize and apprehend the world of spirituality became paramount. To make this a reality he sat at the feet of his guru Swami Mahatabakak and took up the study and practice of Kashmir Shaivism. He became completely engrossed and enthralled in his spirituality, wholeheartedly practicing day and night, ultimately experiencing the fullness of Kashmir Shaiva realization. It is to his beloved Kashmir Shaivism that he devoted the whole of his life, teaching it to those who asked and translating and commenting on what he considered to be the most important texts of this system. He became renowned as a philosopher saint steeped in the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. With the growing interest in Kashmir Shaivism over the last thirty years, hardly any publication has appeared without a mention of Swami Lakshmanjoo's contribution to this unique philosophy.

A must read

This is a great book. I read it 23 years ago in my internship and it changed my views of how to treat patients by understanding their disease processes. This new edition is a must read for anyone starting their internship before anesthesia or for anyone else that would like to have a better understanding of common coexisting diseases in their patients.

It is really much better than its 5th edition. Lots of updates with new authors make this edition more practical. Some chapters are completely re-written in an organized way.
