Buyer Beware!

I'm surprised with all of these 5 star reviews that there isn't one negative review. While this book is great at showing off lighting techniques (And why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star)... This book is also a giant ad for Kubota actions. Buying Kevin Kubota's dashboard, lightroom presets, and photoshop actions (also available at his website) end up costing you hundreds of additional hours to achieve the look of the images in this book.

So, if you already are waist deep in Kubota's tools, fantastic, buy this book. You'll soar.

If you are new to photography, or just looking for an affordable path to make your photos better, I'd avoid this.. As, you are being led down a very expensive path from the author.

A decent book with some interesting ideas

I bought this book twice - first time as a gift for a friend of mine who helped me with photography when I was starting and recently again to show some of my colleagues from photo business how to make a decent studio setups with little effort.

I like this book as it is very descriptive and has a lot of info about used equipment for specific shoots. I'm however a bit confused about its particular targeted crowd - new photogs will probably have problems finding exactly same equipment to use (SB-800 anyone?) and older, more experience photogs will already have their own stuff, probably of different brand and/or type and they generally know most of these setups. I took one star for that one - I know it is an older edition, but still.

Still, there are some really cool samples and ideas within this book so I guess $20 isn't much for it, especially since a decent lens is most likely 100x more expensive anyway...

I removed a second star due to annoying and really cheap way that Mr. Kubota promotes his product throughout the whole book. Pretty much ANY photo he took he sent through Photoshop and used some of his filters (which he, of course, would be more than happy to sell to you), pretty much telling you how you can get a good result without software. Boulderdash.

This shameless self-promotion is pitiful and totally misleading. While I think that Mr. Kubota has some really cool photos in his portfolio and is certainly a man with good ideas, this books tarnishes that reputation somewhat.

After all is said and done, my recommendation is that you look for a different book with similar material. This one is somewhat old and although it has some decent setups and ideas you can find similar material presented elsewhere and with less shameless self-promotion.

Disappointing

I was very disappointed with this book. Kubotas first item in this "lighting notebook" is a backlit pair of girls. How are they lit? With flashes? With reflectors? Nope... sunlight through a window. Thank you for this extremely obvious and useless example. People buying lighting books are generally more advanced shooters. This example was and is completely unnecessary.

Which ended up being the tone of this book. It ramps up quickly into extremely expensive lighting examples. There are very few examples for the mid-level photographer. Kubotas uses a price indicator and when half of his examples run over $1000, it's pretty obvious that the book is worthless for anyone who owns that much lighting gear.

While a few of the examples are useful, more than half are not. You're better off searching youtube and collecting videos from a variety of sources. Two stars at most.

Based on 51 interviews with logistics CEOs, strategists, and scenario experts, Heiko A. von der Gracht shows that the logistics service industry draws a backward picture of scenario planning practices as compared to other industries. He further elaborates that the potentials of scenario planning in logistics are, nevertheless, exceptionally high. Explorative research has therefore been conducted that comprises a scenario study on the future of the logistics service industry in the year 2025. Based on a two-round modified Delphi survey with 30 top logistics executives a surprising but realistic picture of the future has been drawn. The scenarios are intended to provide a sound planning basis for long-term logistics decisions, to illustrate the value and potentials of the technique, and to exemplify a systematic scenario development.

From one moment to the next, they report changing inwardly and outwardly -- Shifting "White," then Shifting "Black" again, Shifting "corporate," Shifting "cool" -- a coping and survival skill that often diminishes the joys of living an authentic life.

Shifting can have a devastating effect on a woman's body and soul. In a culture that is both racist and sexist, Black women are suffering. They are susceptible to an array of psychological problems, including anxiety, low self-esteem, disordered eating, depression, and even outright self-hatred. They may make others feel comfortable, but too often they are left feeling conflicted, weary, and alone.

Yet their revealing voices are utterly cathartic. As Black women talk openly about their lives -- contending with the workplace, mothering, coming to terms with their beauty, forging relationships with men, living their spirituality -- they describe what it takes to "make it" despite everything, and bring to light how essential it is to explode the myths and stereotypes still in place.

With this deeper perspective, Black women will find the path back to their true selves and come to understand how important it is to be aware of Shifting in their own lives. And readers of all genders and ethnicities will gain a heightened sensitivity to the continued damage wrought by bias and prejudice, and an increased awareness of what we can all do to make a difference.

USA Today correspondent Jones and psychologist Shorter-Gooden initiated the African American Women's Voices Project and recorded the experiences of 333 survey respondents and 71 interviewees. The results are here compiled to form an urgent narrative, doggedly chasing the hypothesis of the book's title: that the twin bigotries of race and gender force black women to constantly "shift" between identities in order to accommodate the expectations thrust upon them by black men and white America. "From one moment to the next, they change their outward behavior, attitude, or tone, shifting `white,' then shifting `Black' again, shifting `corporate,' shifting `cool.' " The authors argue that the contemporary survival tactic of shifting is rooted in slavery, but history does not figure strongly, with the bulk of the book composed of quoted testimonies from the research subjects, tracking their shifting experiences in the realms of communication, mental health, beauty standards, romance, child-rearing and religion. Compelling and educational tribulations are piled on, but the authors rarely pause to reflect on the contradictions or solutions the stories present. Yet the book makes a real contribution, as men and women of all races will find it an illuminating if sometimes shocking record of life between two "isms."

Charisse Jones is an award winning author and reporter for USA today. Kumea Shorter-Gooden is a licensed psychologist and professor of psychology at Alliant International University.

This book carefully recreates the emotional rollercoaster that Black women ride every day in corporate America. This work rest on the African American Women’s Voices Project (AAWBP), which interviewed four hundred African American women from across the United States. Overwhelmingly the women commented that they are always shifting from “White” to “Black” in terms of their vocabulary, interactions, movements, and emotional stress. This is viewed as a coping skill that often diminishes the joys of living an authentic life. Jones notes that this is causing detrimental mental and emotional stress on Black women. The continued effects of racism and sexism makes African American women susceptible to many issues: anxiety, low self-esteem, eating disorders, obesity, depression, and self-hatred. African American women are allowed to share their feelings and voice their concerns in this ground breaking research. While the term sister circle is not mentioned, it is referred to in terms of seeking out others from similar backgrounds and having regular breaks with women pressing through similar issues. There are suggestions for how to live through the effects of racism and sexism. The narrative is most important as the women deal with motherhood, issues in the workplace, accepting their beauty (however different that may be), building relationships with men and women of other cultures, and accommodating their truth in spirituality. African American women are celebrated and loved on in this remarkable work.
