From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up—The subtitle of this collection is somewhat misleading as only the first half of the book involves the titular characters. It is a transitional volume of sorts, marking the end of Johns's celebrated 26-issue run with an exciting conclusion to a Shazam family crisis. Ordway's short, two-issue story that follows serves as little more than filler, as Bill Willingham (of Fables fame) would take over in issue 29, continuing as the book's writer to the present. Black Adam is also misleading in its indication that it is a self-contained story arc, when it is actually the fifth volume of the current incarnation of Justice Society. Considering Johns's reputation, it's important to have the previous four volumes in the series for the sake of continuity. While perhaps not as central a series to the DC Universe as the "Batman" or "Green Lantern" titles, JSA has a rich cast of unique, often underrated superheroes—and with a capable writer like Johns at the helm, the series gives even the most well-known characters' books a serious run for their money.—Jason M. Geoff Johns JSA finale
By dishpandan
When the Black Marvels are written well they are an enthralling group of characters. Teth Adam in particular is very complex under Johns and the return of Isis adds more interesting depth to his outcome. I really enjoyed this collection and would recommend it if you liked any of his previous JSA volumes or the Black Adam solo mini-series. There are a lot of players involved here so that can make you lost -- it's best if this volume is where you end instead of where you start. The plot will also have a great deal more impact if you are familiar with and attached to these people. While not a must, it helps if you have also read Infinite Crises and 52, since this kind of builds on some events that happened there. Even having read all those, I have not read Captain Marvel, so I was a little confused with some of the recent changes in that mythos. But overall it was well worth the purchase. I am pleased that rather than break up the collections between the end of Geoff Johns' run and the start of Jerry Ordway's, DC included the first few issues of the next storyline here so that you can get a taste of the new creative team. Excellent idea!

Johns takes off, Ordway runs in place, Willingham waits in the wings
By H. Bala
Disappointed with the lack of team cohesion during the went-on-forever Gog/Magog/Kingdom Come snoozefest, the core members of the JSA are deliberating whether the roster should be downsized. Meanwhile, we catch up with what's going on with young Billy Batson (who is now the guardian wizard-in-residence on the Rock of Eternity) and also with Black Adam and his efforts to rescue his resurrected wife Isis from the sicko hands of Felix Faust. Faust gets what's coming to him, and Black Adam and Isis reunite and turn their attention to amassing their power base. They start out by attempting to steal the Rock of Eternity's mystical mojo. Isis inadvertently teleports Billy Batson to Fawcett City and, with the writers recalling whose series this is, the JSA swoops in to help the now powerless Billy.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA: BLACK ADAM AND ISIS collects issues #23-28 as the ongoing series goes thru its changing of the guard. Geoff Johns hangs around long enough to collaborate with Jerry Ordway in the Black Adam and Isis arc, although, much like Johns seemed to have been indulging Alex Ross in the Thy Kingdom Come arc, here he seems to be humoring Jerry Ordway. The Black Adam & Isis plot, as other folks have already mentioned, feels like a pick up of plot threads from 52 and the BLACK ADAM: THE DARK AGE mini-series, from COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS to FINAL CRISIS, and even from Ordway's POWER OF SHAZAM! Many pages go by in which the JSA is pretty much relegated to supporting role status.

The now embittered Isis longs to recreate a Black Marvel family which will "destroy the modern worlds and all the sins it festers with." Not too surprisingly, Mary Marvel - plumb loca, pink-haired and gigged out in a black-leather dominatrix outfit - is recruited and the corrosion of her character can't help but still creep me out. A fourth member soon joins the Black Marvels, and the JSAers soon have more than they can handle. Until the inevitable deus ex machina appears, which, by the way, feels rather contrived and threatens to undermine the latest changes in the Marvel family mythos (I'm looking at you, Freddy Freeman).

I don't know that I can pinpoint it all that well, but this arc falls a bit flat for me. I think partly it's because this feels more like a Black Marvels story more so than a JSA story. Also, I wasn't ever down with poor Billy Batson losing his Captain Marvel gig and getting "promoted" as the new wizard languishing on the Rock of Eternity. And I guess I also don't like Isis having become this hardcore scourge of humanity. And, with Atom-Smasher officially regaining membership status, it leaves even less time to focus on the new recruits, who barely get face time in this arc. On the good side, Stargirl is featured a bit and shares a nice moment with Billy Batson, hearkening to their innocent "romance" back in the day when Captain Marvel was a JSAer.

If this had been Geoff Johns' farewell story, I don't know that I would've called it going out on a high. But his swan song, issue #26, turns out to be a terrific little story featuring Stargirl, a character for whom Johns clearly has great affection. No super-villains in this one or world-ending catastrophes, although teenager Courtney Whitmore (a.k.a. Stargirl) does start the story off by wailing: "Black Adam Ruined My Birthday!" This is Geoff Johns' coda and, as the JSA and friends celebrate Courtney's surprise birthday party, we're treated to a series of wonderful little character moments, and we're left with that warm, feel-good sensation. And *that* is going out on a high. My favorite moments have to do with Starman's hilarious concept of "birthday presents" and Courtney's hugging it out with her step-dad - and if you're aware of Courtney and Stripesy's sometimes adversarial relationship, then this is an absolutely emotional scene. Alex Ross's evocative cover also doesn't hurt. Dale Eaglesham's interior art for this issue definitely doesn't hurt. Starman gets in the last word, and it is perfect.

Fully written and pencilled by Jerry Ordway, the two-part ghost story in issues #27 and 28 isn't bad, but it feels like a filler. The JSA confronts the vengeful spirit of a World War 2 supervillain, and, as usual with supernatural activities, the Spectre pokes his pasty white nose in. Trust issues resurface when the JSA's brownstone headquarters in Battery Park is at first alarmingly sealed off by Obsidian and then attacked by a ghost. This is followed by time travel as select members of the JSA are snatched back to 1945 Japan to face retribution. There's a nice twist at the end which almost makes up for the hohumness of the story.

Capping things off is the six-paged backup feature "Origins & Omens," as Scar, the messed-up Guardian of the Universe, casts a dark eye on the JSA and predicts doom and gloom for the team's future. And, apparently suffering from Legion-envy, the JSA decides to expand its roster even more.

I can't wait until Bill Willingham takes over the series. If anyone can revitalize the JSA, it's that dude. Concerning this one, I think that the Black Adam & Isis arc and the WW2 ghost story merit a rating of 3 out of 5 stars, but the inclusion of the Stargirl birthday bash kicks it up to an overall rating of 3.5 stars. Because you can never ever go wrong with having more of Stargirl.

A complete waste of time
By Nicholas Ribera
After just finishing 52, I was all like "hell yeah I want to read more shenanigans of Black Adam!" Unfortunately, this book contains about 10% black adam stuff while the rest is random adventures not at all tied together much like a 1940's JSA issue would be. Also in that caliber is the writing that ensues- most characters only speak in catch phrases and few of them actually have any insightful dialogue.

Worse, though, for me, is the art. While in itself it's not bad, it is just so incredibly static. There is no sense of action in the pages, it's like everyone poses to get heir pictures taken, and there is hardly any use of dramatic angles or perspective. the pacing is also very random, often leaving you looking at two panels over and over again trying to find out how we are going from A to B. You do not get the sense of a film camera moving through a set that really helps a comic to flow in an easy to read form. The only exception is the second issue, which has more dynamic movement and clothing. You feel like the characters are actually moving as they speak, not just frozen in suspended animation with their mouth agape. Plus, the POV pans and tilts from eye level, making the scene much more identifiable.

Overall, this was a misleading title and misleading cover and I wish I had not bought it.

Virginia Woolf: The Patterns of Ordinary Experience, by Lorraine Sim

In her timely contribution to revisionist approaches in modernist studies, Lorraine Sim offers a reading of Virginia Woolf's conception of ordinary experience as revealed in her fiction and nonfiction. Contending that Woolf's representations of everyday life both acknowledge and provide a challenge to characterizations of daily life as mundane, Sim shows how Woolf explores the potential of everyday experience as a site of personal meaning, social understanding, and ethical value. Sim's argument develops through readings of Woolf's literary representations of a subject's engagement with ordinary things like a mark on the wall, a table, or colour; Woolf's accounts of experiences that are both common and extraordinary such as physical pain or epiphanic 'moments of being'; and Woolf's analysis of the effect of new technologies, for example, motor-cars and the cinema, on contemporary understandings of the external world. Throughout, Sim places Woolf's views in the context of the philosophical and lay accounts of ordinary experience that dominated the cultural thought of her time. These include British Empiricism, Romanticism, Platonic thought and Post-Impressionism. In addition to drawing on the major novels, particularly The Voyage Out, Mrs. Dalloway, and To the Lighthouse, Sim focuses close attention on short stories such as 'The Mark on the Wall', 'Solid Objects', and 'Blue & Green'; nonfiction works, including 'On Being Ill', 'Evening over Sussex: Reflections in a Motor-car', and 'A Sketch of the Past'; and Woolf's diaries. Sim concludes with an account of Woolf's ontology of the ordinary, which illuminates the role of the everyday in Woolf's ethics.

Review
'... Sim prompts the reader to think in dialogue, and to think back, through Woolf, to the dusty roads, scraps of newspaper and daffodils in the breeze that bind the world together in a common mind. In this, she has succeeded, making the work a welcome contribution to Woolf studies, and modernist and inter-modernist debates more generally.' Cercles 'In all of its permutations, the keynote of the New Modernist Studies over the past ten or fifteen years has been a fascination with the ordinary... Lorraine Sim's Virginia Woolf: the Patterns of Ordinary Experience (2010), which, in the cultural studies tradition, smoothly blends philosophical history with textual attentiveness and a keen awareness of the material conditions of Woolfian literary creation, represents the most thorough such contribution exclusively to Woolf studies of late.' Todd Avery, Virginia Woolf Bulletin. 'Sim's careful, even-handed and meticulous book certainly enriches our understanding of Woolf, but also offers a nuanced and novel model of literary criticism in the field of everyday life studies.' Bryony Randall, Woolf Studies Annual

Good Primer on Logstash Usage
By Jose Diaz-Gonzalez
Disclaimer: I am the author of the Beaver tool, which is an alternative logstash shipper.

The logstash book pretty much covers everything I wanted to know about Logstash when first diving in. It goes over the simple setup - using Redis/Logstash/ElasticSearch - describes a few tools in the ecosystem, and dives into actually parsing logs and getting data out of them.

A few things I would have wanted to see out of the book:

- Do not peg installation of tools to a version. Current version of beaver is 23, yet he only mentions version 14. Minor quibble.
- Shove out the lumberjack install to it's own chapter. Most people looking into Logstash will not necessarily need Lumberjack, but if they do, it definitely will deserve more than a section of a single chapter
- Mention ES output alternatives. There are a few mentions here, but it's pretty sparse.
- Talk about alternative setups more. Redis is relied upon pretty heavily, but many HA-setups for Logstash currently use AMQP (RabbitMQ) for message brokering, and this should definitely be touched upon heavily. (I personally use Redis.)

Considering that it is currently the only Logstash book, I would say its a very good read for someone who wants to get up to speed on Logstash. If I were starting again with Logstash and this book was around, I would definitely have it in my collection of reference Logstash material.

What I wish had been available when I started with Logstash
By untergeek
I actually received a copy of this book from the author directly. I've read it all, cover to cover (metaphorically speaking).

If you are just learning about Logstash, Elasticsearch and Kibana, this is the book for you. This is the book I wish I'd had a year and a half ago when I first started with Logstash in its infancy. A lot of what you will find in this book is the result of Jordan and the Logstash community's hard work since then to make Logstash more user-friendly and accessible. You'll be a Logstash maven in no time if you follow the examples in this book. The book even shows the basics of extending Logstash by adding your own plugins. This is the first book published on Logstash, and it's worth every penny of the inexpensive asking price.

Nice overview of setting up and configuring ELK
By Sandip Bhattacharya
Other than some minor hiccups which needed me to take some quick advice on freenode, this was a really nice intro to the logstash framework.

If you are trying out the setup the author mentions in the book, remember you really need either separate instances or separate hosts for each of the logstash components - the shipper and indexer. if you have only a single host to try this on, you can setup redis and elasticsearch on it just the way mentioned. But put only one of the configs - shipper or central in /etc/logstash.d and use the standard logstash startup script. Put the other config elsewhere and run that config directly using the logstash executable.

Putting both shipper and central/indexer in logstash.d and using the standard startup script is nontrivial to setup, and needs tagging and conditional to make it work.

“Crunch crunch crunch. Teeth are strong and sharp. Crunch crunch crunch. Teeth can help you chew. But teeth are not for biting. Ouch! Biting hurts.” Sooner or later, almost all young children will bite someone—a friend, a parent, a sibling. This upbeat, colorful, virtually indestructible book helps prevent biting and teaches positive alternatives.

The companion to our best-selling Hands Are Not for Hitting Board Book, Teeth Are Not for Biting gives reasons why children might want to bite. Little mouths feel sore when new teeth come in; sometimes kids bite when they’re hungry, tired, cranky, frustrated, angry, bored, distressed, or seeking attention. Author Elizabeth Verdick suggests positive things children can do instead of biting: chew a chewy toy, drink a cold drink, get a hug, tell a grown-up. This book also includes helpful tips for parents and caregivers.

Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood, by Maria Tatar

Highly illuminating for parents, vital for students and book lovers alike, Enchanted Hunters transforms our understanding of why children should read.

Ever wondered why little children love listening to stories, why older ones get lost in certain books? In this enthralling work, Maria Tatar challenges many of our assumptions about childhood reading. Much as our culture pays lip service to the importance of literature, we rarely examine the creative and cognitive benefits of reading from infancy through adolescence. By exploring how beauty and horror operated in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, and many other narratives, Tatar provides a delightful work for parents, teachers, and general readers, not just examining how and what children read but also showing through vivid examples how literature transports and transforms children with its intoxicating, captivating, and occasionally terrifying energy. In the tradition of Bruno Bettelheim’s landmark The Uses of Enchantment, Tatar’s book is not only a compelling journey into the world of childhood but a trip back for adult readers as well. 30 illustrations

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Michael Dirda Maria Tatar is the John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. Many of us would expect the holder of such an august title to be an authority on, say, "The Nibelungenlied" or Goethe or the novels of Thomas Mann. In fact, Tatar may be our leading scholar of children's literature and of the fairy tale in particular. Two of her more recent books include "The Annotated Brothers Grimm" and "The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen." I want to stress that word "scholar." Early in her introduction to "Enchanted Hunters," Tatar writes that in her courses on children's literature, the students naively "insisted on magic, on the incandescent beauty of the stories, and on the Wordsworthian 'attendant gleams / Of soul-illumination' that accompanied their readings. By contrast, I was eager to break the spell, to demystify and disenchant, moving from reading for pleasure to reading for hidden meanings, symbolic codes, and narrative technique." So be warned: "Enchanted Hunters" is full of insights into "the power of stories in childhood," but its tone is often that of the seminar. Tatar conveniently summarizes her book's aims at the end of her introduction: "I will begin this volume, after a chapter on the origins of childhood stories, by examining the power surges that come with reading and by exploring how books can ignite the imagination. Literature for children enthralls and entrances in large part through the shock effects of beauty and horror. Those moments, in all their unstudied power, are what lure children into a world made up of letters, and they constitute the subject matter of chapters 2 and 3. The final two chapters look at the cognitive gains provided by literacy, showing that children learn, through stories, how to do things with words even as words do things to them. In these chapters, I take up the notion of reading as a process of discovery and explore how that process engages three dominant features in the emotional landscape of the child: boredom, wonder, and curiosity." Tatar then proceeds to a discussion of what it means to read at bedtime, starting with those long centuries of communal tale-telling around the hearth: "The light of the blazing fire combined with the dark, gloomy shadows by the hearth to transmit sharp contrasts, shaping the expectations of listeners and inspiring the tellers. It is no accident that fairy-tale worlds enact struggles between the powers of light and darkness and choreograph collisions between beauty and horror. The atmosphere in which they flourished rippled and flowed with those contrasts." Beauty and horror are central to fairy tales. Such narratives, Tatar writes, usually suggest wondrous beauty by highlighting "the production of radiance (light, glass, gold, and brilliant hues), an insistence on abstract adjectives ('exquisite,' 'lovely,' and 'enchanting'), and descriptions of rapturous contemplation." Everything beautiful "glitters, dazzles, and shines," chiefly because of "metals, ice, glass, mirrors, silver and gold." But if beauty is "abstractly luminous," horror is "depicted not only with detailed specificity but also with astonishing variety." Tatar lists a few of those fairy-tale horrors, sometimes toned down or eliminated in modern retellings: "In the Grimms' 'Snow White,' iron shoes are heated over a fire, and the evil stepmother is forced to dance to her death in 'red-hot iron shoes.' In Andersen's 'Little Match Girl,' we not only see the child 'huddled between two houses, with rosy cheeks and a smile on her lips,' but we also learn that she had 'frozen to death' and that the New Year is dawning on the 'frozen body of the little girl, who was still holding matches in her hand.' In Andrew Lang's Yellow Fairy Book, the Sun-Hero fends off ferocious wolves night after night. Finally, his strength fails him. He falls asleep, and a crab crawls toward him and 'with its claws tore out his tongue.' The princess who lives at the top of the glass mountain in that same collection sits at the window of her castle, gazing out at 'the heap of corpses both of riders and horses' and at the 'many dying men' who lie in her courtyard, 'unable to go any further with their wounded limbs.' " Horror naturally leads Tatar into the subject of death. In Chapter 3 she discusses children's prayers, the Victorian ideal of a "beautiful death," and the boom 30 years ago in high trauma young-adult novels: "According to one count, more than two hundred books of fiction for children took up the theme of death in the 1970s and 1980s." Tatar shows that dealing with fear of the dark -- and, by extension, with the fear of extinction -- forms a major subtext of such picture book classics as Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd's "Goodnight Moon" and Maurice Sendak's "In the Night Kitchen." Even more directly, death proves a major theme of E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web," beginning with its famous opening line: "Where's Papa going with that ax?" In her fourth chapter, "The Magic Art of the Great Humbug," Tatar addresses the power of curses, spells and charms to change reality (in fairy tales, at least), but also how books like L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz," Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden" and Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth" "champion the importance of learning how to do things with words, hinting that control over language conquers helplessness and vulnerability, leading to confidence and authority." In her final chapter, Tatar turns to the connected themes of boredom, curiosity and wonder. How many books, she notes, begin with kids complaining that they are bored with nothing to do? So many of our great children's classics -- she points to Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" and Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" -- underscore that an engaged curiosity offers the cure for boredom. In its turn, curiosity will then lead to the discovery that the world is full of wonder, as Marco discovered in Dr. Seuss's "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street." Tatar's evocative title, "Enchanted Hunters," derives from Nabokov's "Lolita," where the phrase forms one of the book's leitmotifs -- it is, for instance, the name of the hotel to which Humbert takes Lolita. But Tatar staunchly hopes to "reclaim" the term as a description of the child as reader, "curious, energetic, and enthralled." To show more precisely what she means, she concludes her book with a long appendix in which dozens of writers -- from Frederick Douglass and Walt Whitman to Rita Dove and Harold Bloom -- testify to the power of childhood reading. So, in the end, "Enchanted Hunters" paradoxically takes us right back to accounts of -- what else? -- magic, incandescent beauty and Wordsworthian gleams of "soul-illumination."

Maria Tatar's "Enchanted Hunters: The Power of Stories in Childhood" is an engaging read, and does not resort to heavy-handed use of language nor a boorish academic tone to make it's point. This made it highly appealing to me and I found a lot of useful insights into the powerful impact of stories upon children.

Chapter One: Reading Them to Sleep [Storytelling and the Invention of Bedtime Reading] explores the various facets of storytelling and bedtime reading. Chapter Two: Beauty, Horror, and Ignition Power [Can Books Change Us?} looks at narrative techniques, especially on reader's fascination with the macabre and horrific. Chapter Three: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep [Brushes with Death] explores the theme of death in children's books. Chapter Four: The Magic Art of the Great Humbug [How to do Things with Words] explores how words and thoughts as expressed in various children's literary works, have the power to affect children. Chapter Five: Theaters for the Imagination [What words can do to you] also explores the power of literature on children.

My major criticism of this book is in the lack of comprehensive representation of major children's authors [which I admit is difficult under the constraints of space etc] or authors whose works have had significant impact on children [e.g. Enid Blyton whose works had a huge impact on me as a child, Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit tales etc.]

I loved the Appendix which had a compilation taken from the works of noted authors on how books have a transformative power [e.g. Frances Hodgson Burnett, Graham Greene, Eudora Welty, Gustave Flaubert, and many more]. There is an extensive Notes section as well as Bibliography, and an Index.

On the whole, I gained a couple of useful insights into the pull of literature and it's impact on children. It definitely makes the case for reading to children, something I'm passionate about. I feel this book is valuable to parents, teachers, librarians and anyone involved/interested in encouraging reading in children.

Groundbreaking, important & personal.
By Jerry Griswold
A valuable book for scholars and the intellectually inclined parent, "Enchanted Hunters" is Maria Tatar's best offering to date. Sliding sideways from her solid scholarship on the fairy tales, Tatar has entered the field of Children's Literature Studies by means of the topic of reading and done something original and precedent setting. Those ready to go beyond the orthodoxy of the Jacqueline Rose Cult will find here new ways of examining childhood experience, as well as the perfect pitch of an authorial voice that is warm and personal. In literary scholarship, this book is the equivalent of the perfect string quartet.

Why Do Children Lie About Reading?
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
Maria Tatar, a professor of German who has worked heavily in German-language fairy tales, became curious about the phenomenon of "bedtime stories." The idea of reading children into sleepiness makes little sense; she writes: "Nothing keeps you awake like a good story." How, then, do children consume stories? Given access to books, kids read voraciously, tell one another stories, play make-believe, and enact impromptu plays. Stories are endemic to childhood.

Children find themselves pulled between conflicting forces, the eat-your-spinach wholesome reading grown-ups demand, and the deep, sensory experiences of stories they actually seek. As Tatar notes, children read with great aplomb, disappearing into books because they love the experience. And "experience" certainly describes it: kids embrace books that create rich sensory detail and muscular action. Children have opportunities to enjoy reading as grown-ups, with jobs and mortgages and responsibilities, cannot.

Presumably, the reading experience, which elides unnecessary content, feels more real and intense than ordinary life, with its long, inactive stretches of workaday banality. Children, who lack lived experiences, become seasoned through their stories. Because reading lets us experience a range of pleasures--different identities, different time periods, different nations--we absorb it deeply, particularly when we don't have conflicting ideas or pressures attempting to limit and control our thoughts.

Knowing this, Tatar's overview of pre-Twentieth Century "children's literature" is downright chilling. In Tatar's telling, adult scholars once sought to stifle children's curiosity, numb their desire for experience, and reduce kids to mere moral instruments. Not for nothing did teachers foist "primers" on kids, a learning apparatus first devised for monastic devotion. The enthusiasm, joy, and wonder we associate with childhood, teachers once unabashedly strove to squelch.

Tatar lavishes praise upon writers like JM Barrie, of Peter Pan fame, or Wonderland creator Lewis Carroll, grown-ups who didn't have children of their own. Freed from responsibility for children's moral upbringing, they immerse themselves in what it means to be young. Carroll's colorful, nigh-psychedelic otherworld, and Barrie's adventurous utopia, transcend age, era, and nation. No wonder their Victorian fairy stories retain massive, imitative popularity generations later.

Consider the "literature" adults insist children should consume. From the highly moralistic parables in elementary schoolrooms, to the belletristic art writing favored in high school and college courses, it's hard to imagine writing more incisively designed to alienate avid readers. Twenty-some years removed from 11th Grade English, I've finally begun appreciating Hemingway's and Fitzgerald's true accomplishments; but reading because we're "supposed to" generates a dry, joyless experience.

No wonder authors frequently dismissed as "young adult" writers, like JK Rowling and Suzanne Collins, have dedicated adult audiences. Their immersive storytelling is essentially bilingual, having both the sensory, theatrical content children love (and adults too, if we're honest), and the subtlety and nuance adults seek. Seven-year-olds, seventeen-year-olds, and seventy-year-old can all lose themselves in Harry Potter, while having unique, sophisticated experiences appropriate to their age range.

Yet, in perhaps Tatar's most telling passages, children feel openly guilty about reading. Besides her own students, Tatar cites influential sources, from Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Robin Williams, on this duality: making and consuming stories is children's greatest joy, but we mock "introverts," "addicts," and "bookworms" for reading. Some never outgrow this. Tatar quotes Oprah Winfrey recounting her mother berating her for "think[ing] you're better than the other kids."

No wonder adults shift reading energies onto other tasks. From work addiction to family responsibility to even just reading books they "ought to" read, adults divert their attention to putatively useful purposes. Yet Tatar notes adults read to children, at least partly, to recapture that intense "theatre for the imagination" they remember from childhood. I suggest grown-ups read paperback romances and spy thrillers (essentially grown-up fairy tales) for similar purpose.

Tatar recaptures the way we read during our childhood, seeking sophisticated experience and sensory richness, not intellectual heft. Whether society steals it (as I believe) or our psyches cannot generate images internally anymore (as Tatar implies), we adults lose this pleasure in reading, and spend years of adulthood second-guessing ourselves. We intellectually seek meaningful themes and critical complexity, while longing to simply vanish into somebody's lavishly felt story.

Stories, Tatar declares, create the experience of childhood. Between the sensory pleasure of Wonderland, and the complex experiences kids only have vicariously, childhood remains the unique domain of stories. And while Tatar doesn't craft a writing guide for children's literature, nor a discursus on adulthood reading, her message lies behind every grown-up's reading experience. We spend adulthood seeking to rediscover that wonderful, magical story.
