Doesn't translate well to a book

This is called "The Confidence Course," because it is based on a course that Walter Anderson teaches. Actually, this is THE course. This book reads like the script of a self improvement course.

And, it's sad, because I would have loved to take this course. I think that the actual course is well worth however much he's charging for it.

However, Walter's course doesn't translate well to a book format. Every couple of pages it has an activity that would work well in a classroom, but fails miserably in a book. You're supposed to do all of these activities where you write stuff out on papers and wait a week while you try stuff. Since I just wanted to read the book, those were kind of annoying.

That's sad, too, because I would have loved to read an actual book by Walter Anderson on this subject rather than a script of a course. He should have an editor totally rearrange this into book format, and then re-release it.

It's got excellent content, and the content was exactly what I was looking for--how to re-program your brain, the negative power of "no" statements, tips on telling stories, and tips on giving speeches. But, the presentation of the content is poor.

And, I don't mind blatant self promotion of purchasing additional stuff in a book as long as the book has actual content. This book does deliver of both the blatant self promotion and the actual content.

"Confidence is the key to success", ok that is not a secret, but how to gain that consciousness of our inner power could be a tricky quest.

This book offers you twenty simple lessons, that addresses simple and direct solutions that will teach anyone how to gain self assurance, and attract others people attention and respect. You will find this book to be a personal workbook with exercises and examples from real life situations.

The seven steps developed along the 20 lessons in the book are:

- Identify who is responsible.

- Believe in something big.

- Practice tolerance.

- Be brave.

- Love someone.

- Be ambitious.

- Smile.

But a word of advice, no book can do anything for you that you are no willing to do. Buy this book only if you are willing to translate into action what you will learn, .. confidence can only be obtained from practice.

The best motivational book I have ever read!

I first bought a copy of the audiocassette version of Walter Anderson's seminar in 1999. It just happened to catch my eye in a bookstore, and the premise seemed simple. Intrigued, I planned to take it home and listen to it. Instead, I played it on the way home. Maybe I shouldn't have, because I was paying too much attention to the tape and not on driving. His voice was so moving and powerful that it made me take notice. His simple style caught me off-guard, and was the best motivator I ever could have had. Walter became a presence in my life, and I feel that my life turned around because of him. I also feel I'm a better writer because of him.
I made at least two copies of the tape, and after they all warped, I bought a new original set. After it became available, I decided I wanted to get the book. After checking out a copy of my local library so many times I couldn't check it out any more, I bought a copy. I've only had it for a couple of months, but it is already dog-eared and written in. It feels like I've owned it for years.
I could keep this a balanced review and say something negative, but there isn't any point. There is nothing negative I could ever say about about this book. Every word is weighted with his earnestness and motivates the reader to search within himself to find out what he desires most. As he did with me, Walter will excitedly tell you to dream big, and will gently tell you that everyone struggles, and will motivate you to take the risk of doing what it takes to live your dream. His advice was the best I've ever received. Today I am doing what I have always wanted.
And it feels great.

Australian information needs expansion

The information about Australia's temperate climate needs a little bit of an expansion, for instance: Victoria and Tasmania; which are the most predominant temperate climate states of Australia (particularly Tasmania), as you will notice in the link below. Also New South Wales and a small portion of Queensland have temperate environments. New Zealand needs an entry, perhaps along with alot of other small island countries in the Southern hemisphere, however I'm not sure if they fall into a different climate classification.

On a positive note, I found the book extremely modern, containing the latest environmental and biological scientific data i.e. contrast of vegetation communities shown by 2d illustrations; excellent plant structure images from scanned electron micrographs. Along with excellent photography of landscapes, plant communities and individual plants with close ups of flowers. Most pictures are in colour, with excellent diagrams of plants from a botanical point of view, which could do with illustrative references for the ametuer botanist, like myself.

There is also climatology maps on the regions discussed within the book and alot more. This is a valuable book for the amateur, all students and those within a related professional field.

Nature docent

I'm a recently trained nature docent and checked this book out of the library many times. I found so much information in it that I kept renewing the book I finally decided it was well worth purchasing it. I'm mainly interested in the section on California which at times is overwhelming but I like to "grow into my purchasers" so I've been very satisfied. tt is not for those who want something "watered down" but for those with a real interest in The Mediterranean Clmate and the plant life adapted to this unique environment.

Great overview of mediterranean climates

This book is great. It has plenty of pictures, diagrams and drawings. Most of the pictures are not in color, however, which is its biggest downfall. It is not a detailed evaluation of mediterranean climates nor is it a good plant ID book, but provides an excellent overview for both the layman and scientist. It provides informatin on the plants that make the mediterranean climate unique and the typical plant communities that are found in them. It is great for someone who doesn't want to get bogged down with individual species and wants to see how all the parts fit together. I first checked this book out of my local library and felt it would be such a good reference book for work, play and travel that I had to have it. The book uses the most scientific and inclusive use of the term Mediterranean which means you are going to get descriptions of plant communities from San Diego to Sacramento to San Francisco. For those of us that prefer the more exclusive definitions it may come as a shock that San Francisco and Sacramento could be considered mediterranean so I'm warning you now. I am currently using this book to help plan a trip to Australia as a supplement to Lonely Planet's travel guides. This book has inspired me to visit all the world's mediterranean climates at some point in my life and I'm not even a plant lover.

"Mathematics is the extension of common sense by other means."

I run across a lot of books that I add to my to-be-read list and then forget about until after their publication dates or I stumble upon the book in the library or bookstore. How Not to Be Wrong was initially one of those books, but it sounded so good that I found myself obsessively thinking about it and started a search for a pre-publication copy. Since I'm not a librarian, didn't win a copy via First Reads, and don't have friends at Penguin Press, it took some time and effort, but having procured a copy and read it, I can say that it was well worth my time and $6.00. How Not to Be Wrong is a catchy title, but for me, this book is really about the subtitle, The Power of Mathematical Thinking.

Ellenberg deftly explains why mathematics is important, gives the reader myriad examples applicable to our own lives, and also tells us what math can't do. He writes, “Mathematics is the extension of common sense by other means”, and proceeds to expound upon an incredible number of interesting subjects and how mathematics can help us better understand these topics, such as obesity, economics, reproducibility, the lottery, error-correcting codes, and the existence (or not) of God. He writes in a compelling, explanatory way that I think anyone with an interest in mathematics and/or simply understanding things more completely will be able to grasp. Ellenberg writes “Do the Math” for Slate, and it's evident in his column and this book that he knows how to explain mathematical ideas to non-mathematicians, and even more so, seems to enjoy doing so with great enthusiasm. I won't pretend that I understood everything discussed in this book, but it's such an excellent book that I also bought the hardcover (so I have an index which my pre-pub copy does not), and reread the book so I do have a much more thorough understanding. I've wished for a book like this for a long time, and I'd like to thank Jordan Ellenberg for writing it for me!

It helps to be a math major

My mistake. I thought is was going to be a more popularized version of the interface between mathematics the real world. It was there, I suppose, but the math was over my head and I felt somewhere between bewildered and stupid. Not an unusual condition for me, but the book didn't help much. I struggled through about half of it before deciding it was just too much work. I think my son-in-law might enjoy it more.
If you are going to enjoy the book, you should have an interest in mathematics for mathematics's sake and make the judgement of the book on that basis.
I'm probably not being fair to the author. It's a good book, but you should be aware of what you're getting.

Good book, but tends too focus on Misuse of Mathematics in Polls and Politics

There are some interesting anecdotes in this book on the power of mathematical thinking. And, there are some mind twisting concepts. Here are two for you:
- Does .9999... = 1?
- Does the series +1-1+1-1+1-1... = 1/2?

There are additional concepts like this that will excite your mathematical mind (and I only recommend this book for individuals interested in mathematics). However, most of the book covers probability and statistics - e.g. expected value, Baynesian decision theory, hypothesis testing, etc. (which I love but you might not..) And, the book covers it with a political perspective, i.e. what is wrong with political polls and why statistics are mis-used in politics, etc.

I disagree with the reviews that mention this author's bias against conservatives. Although he may be a liberal, he doesn't bias his writing too much in any direction.

However, the continual discussion of use and misuse of mathematics in politics can get tiring.

Just the right level

Easy piano is such a broad category but after perusing all the levels in this series I found the exact one for my student. She is nine and is right at the end of the Alfred Level 2 lesson book. These are easy enough to learn one in a few weeks and even have it memorized and super secure for a Recital in about two months total.

Great easy songs for idling on a piano bench around Halloween. Everyone that tried was able to sight read songs from this collection - it's mostly quarter notes at adagio tempos.

Would recommend for very small children or sheet music to leave out while entertaining.
