A young girl's painful first love and the unresolved feelings of the relationship are the crux of this novel, which moves from West Sussex in 1980 to Alloa, Scotland and New York. When Claire Barclay's widowed mother meets and marries the kind, gentle Leo Harrison, fifteen years her senior, mother and daughter move to Leo's rambling home in Scotland, a place Claire grows to love. Although she is never accepted by her jealous step-siblings, Charity and Marcus, Claire basks in Leo's generous affection, the only flaw in her world the abrupt and inexplicable ending to her close friendship (on the cusp of romance) with Jonas Fairweather, whose father works on Leo's estate.

Claire learns to put heartbreak behind, albeit unresolved, until her mixed emotions resurface years later after her mother's unexpected death and Leo's failing health. Suddenly Claire is back in Scotland with her husband and small daughter, faced with a confusing set of circumstances and a scheme that may threaten Leo's future security. Until old issues are put to rest and new troubles confronted, Claire's peace of mind remains elusive. At the heart of the novel is the unresolved breakup between Claire and Jonas, made more difficult by the uncertainty of Leo's future, the elderly man caught between his step daughter and his adult children, who have ideas of their own.

This novel might have more impact were the characters and their conflicts less superficial and formulaic. But it is hard to credit a young woman's loss of first love and the rancor still carried towards her by Marcus and Charity, let alone Fairweather's prominence in the story. The plot remains mired in petty, if expensive grievances. Pilcher does capture Claire's idyllic childhood in Scotland and writes with flair of the details of place. Yet the conflict at the heart of the story is less than satisfactory, the characters not quite memorable. Luan Gaines/2010.

Engrossing, but not as good as his earlier books

I'm a fan of Robin Pilcher and couldn't wait to get his latest book. I was put off at first by the way he shifts back and forth to various years, and found I had to keep checking back to see what year I was reading about. Did he think the plot wouldn't stand if he wrote chronologically? I also got impatient in the middle and cheated to see the ending. And then I got engrossed again and read every word.

I don't want to give away the plot, so let me say that what I especially liked about this book is that it is a man writing about relationships, not just romantic ones, but family and more. However, he also brings in subjects most female authors don't, such as business and finance, so his plots gets involved and interesting. In the end I found the plot and the characters believable.

If you are a Pilcher fan, either of Robin or his mother, do buy this book! But if you are just being introduced to this author, I recommend that you start with one of his earlier books.

Note that this book is being simultaneously published in the UK under a different title. So don't buy another book of Pilcher's with the characters Claire, Violet, Leo, Jonas, Art.

About the Author
Romel W. Mackelprang (DSW, MSW, University of Utah, USA) is professor of social work and director of the Center for Disability Studies and Universal Access at Eastern Washington University, USA. Active in disability rights since 1980, he continues to be involved in the independent living movement. He is committed to inclusive policies in which disability is considered integral to diversity in society. In recent years, he has expanded his disability rights work to several countries in East and West Africa. Richard O. Salsgiver (PhD, Carnegie-Mellon University, USA) is professor emeritus of social work at California State University, Fresno, USA. Born with cerebral palsy, he has dedicated his academic career to research and teaching concerning issues around disability and the American culture. His philosophy concerning disability comes out of the independent living movement, where he played a key role alongside leaders who included Judy Heumann, Ed Roberts, June Kailes, and Brenda Premo.

Great textbook but no Kindle e-edition.

My book arrived on time and in good condition. My class on community inclusion requires it. Very few books deal with inclusion from a Human Services perspective. This text is a bit heavy on theory for my taste but this revised edition does have some examples that help create a more emotional connection for the reader. Since this is a senior level class one has to expect theories and models. My introductory class that I took about 2 years ago used an older edition. I am glad to see a newer more up to date edition. My only complaint is that the book is not available in a kindle edition. An electronic version exists in google play books which, as we know I cannot get on my Kindle unless I go through all sorts of complicated processes. How about it Amazon? Please make more textbooks available as Kindle books or find a way to get along with google play. After all, google has an app for Kindle content - why doesn't Kindle have an app for google play books and content? Mrs. B

Awesome book for the ITIL Foundation exam

This book was recommended by my company, which required me to get ITIL Foundations certified. This was the only piece of study material I used, outside of practice exams, in order to pass the test. This is a great resource for anyone just learning the ITIL methodology that wants to take the Foundation exam. I also highly recommend getting your hands on as many practice questions as possible before taking the exam. The book has practice questions at the end of each chapter, and a full 40 question exam at the end of the book. The answers to the exam provide detailed reasons as to why they are correct. The practice questions are pretty close to the real test.

The book is 201 pages with some forewords, 13 chapters, a section for additional information and an index. The chapters are:
1- The ITIL qualification scheme
2- Introducction to service management
3- ITIL and the service lifecycle
4- Service strategy
5- Service design
6- Service transition
7- Service operation
8- Continual service improvement
9- Service management technology
10- How it all fits together
11- The examination and exam preparation
12- Sample ITIL Foundation examination
13- Answers

The real meat of the book is chapters 4-8, which go over the ITIL lifecycle. In each chapter, the overarching phases of the lifecycle are broken down into "Purpose and Objectives," "Scope," "Business Value," and "Key Principals." Then the corresponding processes for that phase are each broken down into the same categories, and related definitions are called out in highlighted boxes. Throughout the book there is a case study about a hotel, which gives real world examples of how to apply the concepts.

boring, bureaucratic over-complication of common sense in existence

If you're reading this than you probably already know that the subject matter of this book is quite possibly the most dry, boring, bureaucratic over-complication of common sense in existence. With that said, they did an amazing job minimizing the suffering of the reader with this book by getting straight to what you need to know for the exam and not wasting your time with unnecessary rambling like some others. Very direct and to the point, very well organized and makes a great reference. Half the size of "Foundations of IT Service Management" by Brady Orand, with much clearer explanations, overall this is the best book on the subject.

I read this book when I was younger, so looking at it now it's pretty ridiculous.. Although I loved it when I did read it. The whole "Who's Noel's Secret Santa" thing gets pretty old and about 50 pages into the book you know who it is. All in all, I was pretty entertained with the story. I only wished these books were a bit longer, I finished it in about an hour.

By looking closely at individual poems, Small demonstrates that Dickinson's deviations from "normal" rhyme schemes play a significant part in her artistic design: her modulations and dislocations of rhyme serve to structure the poems and contribute to their dynamic shifts of mood and meaning. Analyzing Dickinson's more daring experiments, Small shows how the poet achieved uncanny effects with fluctuating partial rhymes in some poems and with homonymic puns in others. It is in the interplay between the musical and the written aspects of Dickinson's language, Small contends, that her poetry comes alive. Small takes particular note of the use of rhyme at the ends of poems, illustrating Dickinson's brilliant effects in closing some poems decisively and in leaving others tantalizingly open-ended.

David Macaulay is an award-winning author and illustrator whose books have sold millions of copies in the United States alone, and his work has been translated into a dozen languages. anatomy of an infrastructure

This book ranks as one of Macaulay's best, as it reveals the networks of systems that are the lifeblood of a city, from various building foundations to sewers to subways, showing how they are constructed and sometimes interact with each other. The text, though minimal, is packed with information, which is supplemented by the superb and detailed drawings. One of the coolest aspects of the book, though, is the views from below, as if a rat with x-ray vision were able to gaze up at this intricate maze of technological wonders. Macaulay's sense of humor is evident throughout, as seen by his inclusion of various critters (including an alligator and an elephant), lots of references to dogs and fire hydrants, a billboard ad for his book PYRAMID, and even a human skull and hand (!!) in one drawing of an excavation. Great fun to read and highly recommended.

Great Visual Imagination and Wit

Most book illustrators portray buildings from an eagle's eye perspective. A few talented illustrators will open up the buildings and give insightful cross sectional views. What makes this book so special is that David Macaulay shows us buildings from the perspective of looking up from the bedrock on which the building rests. This is unique and is typical of Macaulay's great visual imagination and wit.

This book concentrates on a big city corner where four large buildings sit. The story begins with the foundation excavation, the pouring of foundation pilings and moves up to building infrastructure that sits just below the city street. We are all aware that a great deal of engineering goes into making large cities livable. However, there is nothing like a well illustrated book to help one understand the sheer complexity of our modern infrastructure.

I would recommend this book to older children with an interest in the physical world around them. It is also a great book for adults with an interest in architecture and urban planning. There are illustrators with better drafting skills than David Macaulay but when it comes to sheer imagination, Macaulay is in a league of his own. Highly recommended.

What Mr. Macaulay does is pull up a city by the roots, shake the dirt off, and take a no-nonsense (well, maybe a little nonsense) look at what is revealed. The illustrations are clear and informative, with just a touch of whimsy. The book covers sanitary sewers, storm sewers, water lines, electricity, telephone, subways and building foundations. A gift for aspiring civil engineers of all ages!

Hi - my journey into the financial markets was prompted by a desire to make sense of the jargon filled replies I usually received when asking any financial adviser, the simplest of questions. Clearly they believed as a mere woman, I was incapable of understanding the complexities of the markets. This prompted my desire to learn, and since then I have been involved in every aspect of trading and investing for over seventeen years. Now at last, I have the luxury of time, to devote the next phase of my life to writing a series of books with one aim. To explain complex subjects and concepts surrounding the financial markets, in a clear and simple way. I actually began my professional life, as an English teacher. However, English was not my first language, having arrived in the UK from Italy at the tender age of three. At that time I spoke no English whatsoever, and my first memories are of my little village school in Scotland where I grew up, and where I learnt to read and write, chalk in hand! Very old fashioned, but what a wonderful way to learn. Since then, I have never stopped talking! - well I am Italian and as I'm sure you know, Italians ALWAYS have an opinion on EVERYTHING!! Languages must be in my blood, as I also studied French and Spanish. I've now transferred the 'teaching gene' into written form through the power of Amazon. She proffers a "clean" chart. So simple without all the myriad analyses lines and numbers generated from one simple datum....the PRICE. All you really need is price, volume, support, resistance and candlesticks (and just a mere few of those). What a pleasure looking at an uncomplicated chart. For the first time I am consistently making money as a swing trader, using 5m,15 m, 1H and 1 day time frames. The 1h and 1D are for establishing the support & resistance lines. I do the analysis and make the trade in the 15m...the 5m is used for entry/exit timing only.

However, though the text and concepts are 5 star, the small black and white charts with tiny candlesticks in two shades of grey are almost unintelligible.

Taking IBD to a higher level.

Having been a follower of Investors Business Daily, I know the importance of volume that they profess. However, I was long disappointed with their continued use of open close low high charting as I have taken time to learn candles. When I saw this book incorporated both volume and candles, I had to buy it. I was not disappointed. I have spend much money on training at the Online Trading Academy which professes supply and demand zones. It may be that I'm doing something wrong, but my success was not what I thought it should be. After reading a few chapters of Anna's book, I began to look at levels differently. I scalp futures and found I made more money doing less trades. This after reading the book once. I'm going to reread it and hopefully more will sink in.

a true gem on intermarket analysis (bought paperback even after reading it on kindle)

Big props to the author as i really enjoyed this book...to be honest it was even better than john murphy's intermarket analyis.
Very well written, and by that I mean that everything is explained with a degree of simplicity leaving out the majority of unnecessary information thats useless for trading. Reading this with prior experience in the field allows u to appreciate it even more.
its important to understand that this in not a trading system....but more importantly its an "approach" to how to analyze, prepare and overall read the market.
the burden of turning this analysis into money will always lie on each individual trader and their specific trading approach.
(im new to the volume analysis stuff...but has been a useful tool for me with very short term trading)
