Half-Decent complementary material

A bit of background:

I just passed the 202 today with a score of 590, hence getting my LPI 2 certification.
Before studying the topics I had never really interacted with network services to the degree required by the certification. (lots of detail)

To study for the test, I read around on man pages, official documentation, assorted forums and so on.
I read on the test requirements from the LPI.org website and went after the information myself. I ended up writing around 12.000 lines of documentation on Notepad++. I didn't do any fake tests beforehand or anything like that.

Which takes me to the book:

If you only read this book and take the test, there's no way you'll pass. LPI is different from some other certifications available (such as CCNA with the whole Cisco Press thing) that it doesn't give you the study material. It gives you the areas of interest and lets you go crazy with it. I expected this book to be broader and more comprehensive than it actually is. Not only that, just by paying attention to the exam contents on the website and skimming the book you can see that a lot of stuff is outright left out. And what is not left out sometimes is explained poorly. The iptables chapter is terrible. There's a chapter with GRUB on it, but the test regards GRUB legacy, and GRUB 2 is explained on the book. The Samba related section of the test is enormous, and I can't recall more than one sample configuration explained on the book. Postfix with virtual domains can get pretty wild (and it was very interesting to learn) and the book doesn't even touch it.

It helped to fill one gap, that being PAM, which I had a hard time understanding.
If anything, you can use this book as a benchmark: Study everything you have to and then read this book. If its all too easy and you can spot the thousands of flaws and holes on the book, you're good to go.

Experience is king, this book helps fill the gaps.

First, I passed both LPIC-2 exams, even scoring 100% on 117-201 and 720/800 on 117-202 (53/60 questions correct). I've been using Linux for about 10 years now, and have been a Linux Systems Admin professionally for about four. This book is great, I read Roderick Smith's Linux+ book (LPI version of the exam) which is also an excellent book, so I had no hesitation buying this book. Reading this book alone will not get you to 100% of what you need to pass the exams, practice and experience is whats going to get you a good score. What I did was read each chapter and then if I did not feel 100% about the subject in that chapter I started researching the topics covered, and investigated further about those topics, I also built a home lab utilizing virtual machines running on top of Fedora 15 (yum groupinstall Virtualization) so I could build a bind dns server, a apache web server, a squid proxy server, sendmail/postfix mail servers, etc. I rarely had to do more research on the first half of the book (first exam topics) because the vast majority of content I knew in depth (hence the 800/800 score), but the second half I spent some time on and learned a lot. Overall its a great book, and I'll continue to use it as a reference.

Minus 1 star for the price tag, especially the Kindle price which is what I purchased, $40 for a digital book is a bit much in my opinion.

Maybe a good summary but you NEED another lpic-2 guide

As said, you need another material in order to pass the exams or a lot of experience in each chapter. The example tests are too easy when you compare them with the real exam.

After graduating with an MBA and in no hurry to decide on a career, twenty four year old Levi Johnson applies for a summer job bartending at an exclusive lesbian resort in the Islands. Levi is successful and gets the job and finds herself busy and enjoying her work and her life at Venus Rising. Levi is an instant success. The guests love her, she’s good at her job. Her new employers Nat and Liz are very pleased with their new employee. Life is great for Levi.

Simone, Nat’s sister and the owner of Sappho Cruise Lines, sets her sights on Levi. The two women quickly become inseparable. Both Levi and Simone are falling in love and seem to be heading in the direction of a permanent relationship. Until the day Simone shows herself in her true light. Simone has always been a player and just leaves the island and a broken hearted Levi with no explanation.

Vanessa is the Captain of the Sappho One cruise ship. When Vanessa meets Levi, she is smitten by her. But Levi is still nursing a broken heart. Vanessa sticks around and Levi finds herself becoming attracted to her. Vanessa becomes instrumental in healing Levi’s broken heart.

When Simone returns, she realizes she’s thrown away the best thing in her life. She isn’t going to let Levi go easily and begs for forgiveness. Who will Levi choose? The undependable scheming seductress Simone, who may break her heart again? Or the loving and dependable Vanessa who will do anything in her power to make Levi happy, including letting her go, if that’s what it takes?

Ali Spooner is an excellent storyteller, I’ve been enjoying her books for a number of years now.

This book centers around Levi, her job and her leisure time at the Venus Rising Resort. We read of the love triangle Levi finds herself being a part of when she falls in love with two vastly different women. All the characters in this book are multidimensional and are instrumental in the easy flow of this story.

There are many twists and turns and even the touch of an old curse to contend with. The book is chock full of red hot steamy sex and romance. A pure luxurious and easy read with some delightful characters.

Great characters and steamy love scenes

I absolutely loved Levi's character and of course Vanessa, who wouldn't love an attentive sexy captain. The rest of the cast of characters were also wonderful to read about the way they supported and cared about one another. I really look forward to reading more stories about these women and learn how Vanessa and Levi fare. Maybe even hear more about Simone. Wonderful little twist in the story about the "curse". Great read and hot sexy love scenes! Ali's done it again!

This book was incredible. From the moment you meet Levi you root for her to find the perfect woman for her. She is bartender extrodronacre with her new drink the Tropical E, she becomes the the hit of the island. Then comes along Simone a love and leave them person. Levi falls hard. Both in love sND when she leaves without a Good Bye. In steps a bedutiful woman in uniform. The cruiseline Captain Vanessa. To Vanessa it's loveat first site with Levi, you'll have to read the book to find out the the twist aND turms of the rest. You won't be sorry. The only thing that will make you sad if you have to put the book down. Way to go Ali love your books.

Only for die hard fans that want everything

Jennifer Warner's paperback and e-book seems to be a beginners' guide to the group, aimed at Jersey Boys audiences who might be curious to know more. It's among a large number of unofficial bios in the independent Life Cap series.

This is not even a good writing job and I am starting to wonder if the author's name Jennifer Warner is even real. The whole thing sounds like it was sourced from the Internet (verified by the bibliography) and nothing appears to be fact checked. Frankie's name is spelled Fran20cesco Stephen Castelluccio. No it's not my typo it has a 20 in the middle of his first name.

The Kindle version is about than 40 pages and each Kindle page is about 1/3 the size of a usual book, so it's really not much more than a pamphlet.

About the Author
Professor in the Department of Public and Community Health at the University of Maryland. Dr. Greenberg earned his baccalaureate and masters degrees from The City College of New York, and then continued his education at Syracuse University where he earned his doctorate. Dr. Greenberg taught at Syracuse University, Boston University, and the State University of New York at Buffalo before accepting his current position at the University of Maryland in 1979. Dr. Greenberg has written over 50 books on such topics as elder care, health, stress management, physical fitness, sexuality, and methods of health education. In addition, he has published over 80 articles in professional journals and lay magazines. Among Dr. Greenberg's honors are included: the University of Maryland Service-Learning Advocate of Year Award for 2003-2004; the American School Health Association's Distinguished Service Award; selection as Alliance Scholar by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the Presidential Citation, the Certificate of Appreciation, and the Scholar Award of the American Association for Health Education; selection for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Outstanding Young Men of America, and Who's Who in World Jewry. Statistical Learning from a Regression Perspective considers statistical learning applications when interest centers on the conditional distribution of the response variable, given a set of predictors, and when it is important to characterize how the predictors are related to the response. For example, in some situations false positives may be far less costly than false negatives. Another important theme is to not automatically cede modeling decisions to a fitting algorithm. In many settings, subject-matter knowledge should trump formal fitting criteria. Yet another important theme is to appreciate the limitation of one’s data and not apply statistical learning procedures that require more than the data can provide.

The material is written for graduate students in the social and life sciences and for researchers who want to apply statistical learning procedures to scientific and policy problems. Intuitive explanations and visual representations are prominent. All of the analyses included are done in R.

A smooth transition from "Statistics" to "Machine Learning"

I must admit that I am really surprised that this beautiful book does not yet have a amazon customer review! This book was purchased by me a year back and completely benefited from it.

The translation from the regression models to machine learning is really smooth. The first chapter "Statistical Learning as a Regression Problem" quickly drives home the point the interrelationship and using the basic regression model, the expectation is really setup to expect the contents in rest of the book. The second chapter is where the connection is pedagogically setup and the presentation is really neat and concise. In fact, if the reader tries to imitate the models through software and data analysis, the returns are really rewarding.

Breiman, et. al. (1984) is the starting point of CART and rightly followed up in Hastie, et. al. (2001-9) ESL classic. In my experience, and strictly mine only, if the reader is slightly not familiar with a good regression course, there is some chance that he may be lost by the time he reaches the decision tree chapter. Prof. Berk's Chapter 3 "Classification and Regression Trees (CART)" is what exactly is required for a thorough understanding of the CART approach. The dividends are so apparent that I have no shame in admitting that the Chapters 8-10 of my book "R Statistical Application Development by Example" have a strong influence of Prof. Berk's book. It is my firm belief that the three chapters from my book, and Berk's book is what is required for the uninitiated reader for a even smoother reading of ESL.

Chapters 4-6 then cover the CART extensions in a very useful way. These chapters are written as a very natural and gradual development of the CART.

It is also remarkable that the concluding section "Summary and Conclusions" of each chapter provides a very nice and logical discussion of the chapters and a simple reading of these pages is in itself a good experience of the recent developments.

Overall, I believe that Prof. Berks book is really useful and must be there on most data miners shelf. It is also very useful for Statisticians who want to pick up on the machine learning tools. The only flip side is that I was really unable to download the data sets used in this book. A glaring mistake in the preface is this sentence "In addition, there is a web site where many examples, including the data, can be found (WEB ADDRESS TO BE ADDED)." I genuinely hope to see a correction to this in the next reprint or edition. However, despite the lack of data sets and the web address, the complete coverage itself merits all the 5 stars and does not warrant any reduction.

Good bridge between statistics and machine learning

This book covers a number of machine learning techniques: CART, Bagging, Random Forest, Boosting and SVM, Smoothers (e.g. splines, GAM) are included as they fit into the regression paradigm. A number of machine learning books mostly present the algorithm, this book discusses the underlying statistics to some detail. Although the theoretical statistical work behind some of these techniques have not been worked out completely, the author gives a good intuitive discussion about some of the issues. Also, the author includes a number of real life examples on how these techniques are actually used in practice. This book is really written for statisticians who want to apply some of the machine learning techniques in their work. You will need a fair amount of statistics knowledge to read this book.

Every child and young at heart should own this book.

While doing some Christmas shopping for holiday books for my grand daughters, I came across this book. I bought it not really knowing what it was. I am so glad that it was one of the books I chose. Great illustrations, wonderful little greeting cards and other novel things to open that the postman delivers to Red Riding Hood, Gingerbread Boy and others, tucked in pocket pages. The postman finally ends up with a visit to Santa. This book will be a repeat purchase by me as gifts for many children and "big kids" I know for years to come. It's different, clever and fun - A book that will become a tradition to read.

Even though I am already eleven years old I am still obsessed with this book. It is funny and the pictures are marvelous. I plan on buying this book for Christmas. This book is for all ages. It is about a postman who goes around delivering mail. On each page there is a little pocket that contains a message/mail. I loved reading this book and I bet you will too.

I bought this for my daughter and later I bought it for friends' children. I'll probably search for it for my grandchildren too. You can probably guess that I like it! Buying for kids is such fun because you get the wow factor, and then you get to see whether they really take to it by reading/playing with it. Kids don't fib about this stuff, do they! I can report 100% success. The enthusiam they have for all the hidden messages, cards, games is so sweet. This truly is a gift that grows and grows on them.

Note - if you have to get a used one, verify all the bits are included. The book wouldn't work without those.

Like her, he knows that history often provides a far richer cast of characters than any novelist could invent. Chief among them is Edmund Morel, a young British shipping agent who went on to lead the international crusade against Leopold. Another hero of this tale, the Irish patriot Roger Casement, ended his life on a London gallows. Even so, he searched the globe to find a colony for Belgium, frantic that the scramble of other European powers for overseas dominions in Africa and Asia would leave nothing for himself or his people. When he eventually found a suitable location in what would become the Belgian Congo, later known as Zaire and now simply as Congo, Leopold set about establishing a rule of terror that would culminate in the deaths of 4 to 8 million indigenous people, "a death toll," Hochschild writes, "of Holocaust dimensions." Those who survived went to work mining ore or harvesting rubber, yielding a fortune for the Belgian king, who salted away billions of dollars in hidden bank accounts throughout the world. Hochschild's superb, engrossing chronicle focuses on one of the great, horrifying and nearly forgotten crimes of the century: greedy Belgian King Leopold II's rape of the Congo, the vast colony he seized as his private fiefdom in 1885. Until 1909, he used his mercenary army to force slaves into mines and rubber plantations, burn villages, mete out sadistic punishments, including dismemberment, and committ mass murder. The hero of Hochschild's highly personal, even gossipy narrative is Liverpool shipping agent Edmund Morel, who, having stumbled on evidence of Leopold's atrocities, became an investigative journalist and launched an international Congo reform movement with support from Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington and Arthur Conan Doyle. I was assigned this book for class and ended up greatly enjoying it! It kept my eyes open even when I wanted them closed. I'm still appalled at the events that occurred in the Congo and even the cover up behind it. Ask yourself this: Why have I never heard of this? Despite millions of people of dying, millions experiencing human brutality and sadistic mistreatment, lands ravaged for resources, and cultures disappearing, it is still swept under the rug. This book is a prime example of why we should keep curious and never take anything at face value. Wow, I'm never taking my tinfoil hat off now.

I recommend this book. The only drawback was that there were frequent cases of interjecting suppositions about persons' motives, thinking or other non-provable details, but his writing style and the vast amount of historical detail were quite good. He includes the story of Stanley and Livingstone. I did not know Stanley had this large a roll in the whole unfortunate series of events in the colonialization of Africa. The historical events covered here were the basis for the plot line in the new movie Legend of Tarzan.

This a piece of history that colonial powers would like to stay hidden. The beginning is a little slow as it lays down back ground of the major characters. It eases into its purpose ; an expose of horror and slavery of the inhabitants of the Congo. The afterward, was the author speaking his opinion directly to the inhabitants of the major colonial powers that allowed it to happen. Excellent history and piece of writing. Coulman Trip Westcott
