Teaching Preaching is a necessary reading for any interesting in understand homiletics from an African American vantage point. While it is true that the basic principles of the art of preaching are the same in any culture, there are practices that are unique to the African American preaching event and this book points out that uniqueness in a colorful way.

I took preparation for preaching from Dr. Clark but not delivery of sermons. The book is classic "Clark" and I appreciate his methods and madness more upon reflection as well as his determination not to have his students deliver empty sermons "up on that stage."

A worthwhile read, though with some problems
By A quiet reader
Writers of books on WordPress are presented with a bit of a quandary, I think. On the one hand, one of the best resources for working with WordPress is the WordPress Codex itself, which is free, complete, regularly updated, and can cover a lot more territory than neatly fits within the covers of any one book. On the other hand, writers of WordPress books have to contend with the fact that a phenomenal book on WordPress already exists, Williams, Damstra, and Stern’s Professional WordPress: Design and Development. Messenlehner and Coleman’s Building Web Apps with WordPress enters this crowded field and acquits itself reasonably well. It’s no Professional WordPress, and it’s not the book it might have been, but it is a solid addition.

The book covers a lot of territory, starting from the basics of WordPress as a CMS and an app platform all the way to how to optimize your WordPress performance. The basic idea of the book, then, is that it will take you from some basic understanding of WordPress and WordPress plugins through to scaling and optimizing your wildly successful app in a production environment. Early chapters introduce WordPress and give some rough idea of how it works. Chapters 4 through 8 are the core of the book, and cover themes, custom post types, users and roles, other miscellaneous APIs and objects, and security. Later chapters introduce more specialized, supplementary topics such as mobile WordPress apps, and ecommerce apps.

Despite the clear layout of the chapters, the organization could be better, and important material is hidden in unexpected places. For example, the section of chapter 5 on custom post types does not actually cover the functions used to work with post metadata. Fundamental concepts like the loop, hooks, and the standard WordPress global variables are not in chapter 2, on WordPress Basics, but buried in Chapter 3, on Leveraging WordPress Plugins.

The quality of the chapters varies. Some chapters of the book are introductory overviews while others are advanced discussions; some are crammed full of advice, insight, and helpful code examples while others are essentially a function reference (a wider failing of PHP books, in my experience). Thorough, insightful discussions of WordPress development are scattered through the book: their comparison of custom taxonomies and post metadata in chapter 5, for example, is one of the best discussions I’ve seen. In general, though, I think the book is hampered by the decision to make it cover WordPress from basics to advanced topics. This means that the book competes with Professional WordPress on its own turf (not to mention a whole host of other books that cover the basics of WordPress), rather than striking out for fresher territory.

Messenlehner and Coleman do have experience designing and building apps, and it would have been interesting to get a deeper perspective on the nuances of WordPress app development. For one, there are a range of ways to interact with your data in WordPress, everything from the WP_Query class to the $wpdb object to using custom tables. Some of this is touched on, in chapter 3 and much later in chapter 16. But the commitment of the book to the whole basics-to-advanced gamut means that these discussions are less sustained, and less helpful, than they might have been if they had just dropped the pretense. This might also help to resolve some of the organizational problems the book has: they discuss working with custom tables in chapter 3, but the full explanation doesn’t come until chapter 16. (Part of the explanation has to do with performance when querying post metadata, which is not discussed in the discussions of post metadata in chapters 2 and 5.)

For similar reasons, the book uses a single app as the example throughout the book (their Schoolpress app). As a number of other reviewers have pointed out, this sample app is not in fact complete (in private beta, at the moment), nor is the code up on github. If this app was in the early design stages when the book was written, one possibility would have been to give more thorough consideration to a range of examples, a range of design possibilities: an app where much of the work is in the theme, and the code in the functions.php file; a middle-of-the-road app, with some custom post types; and a very complex app like Schoolpress. I don’t think the fact that the Schoolpress app is incomplete is entirely fatal, but it seems like a missed opportunity: if the development process of Schoolpress hasn’t gone as smoothly as anticipated, the book might well have been enriched by the lessons of the development process.

Though I’ve dwelt on the book’s problems, the book contains insightful discussions of working with WordPress and making your app work well– though they may not be where you’d expect. With some reorganization, and a clearer sense of the book’s purpose, a second edition of this book may well earn a place next to Professional WordPress as an essential work for WordPress development.

An Excellent Resource for WordPress Application Development

The authors did a fantastic job of taking heavy topics on WordPress and breaking them down into easy, understandable terms. It's clear that (while they do have a ton of code in the book), they are teaching the reader concepts and making the reader aware of what is available to him or her. Honestly, with the amount of complex code being covered, there is no other good way to do it.

Brian and Jason should be commended for their great effort. Plus, schoolpress.me just launched and the code is available on github. Great book and real, live, working sample code. What more could you want?

Building Web Apps with WordPress by Brian Messenlehner and Jason Coleman is a unique book, and one of the few that focuses on deploying a full web application using WordPress as a framework. This book covers a wide variety of topics and had some sections that were extremely important and helpful to get started on building a full web application using WordPress, including Chapters 3, 4, and 16. The whole gamut of development is covered extensively throughout the 16 chapters of this book and the references provided within provide an excellent resource to strike out and continue to expand your own personal development outside the confines of this book. It covers how to create a plugin, how to build a theme, and when to use both of these tools to help develop the web application. The chapter that stood out to me was Chapter 16, Optimization and Scaling; I thought it was by far the most useful chapter to me and it contained a lot of information that is helpful. One of the most useful aspects of the book is providing a wealth of information about the variety of plug-ins available.

But one of the biggest problems I feel with this book is that the application they use as an occasional demonstration is incomplete and no code can be viewed. Expanding upon that thought, I also was unclear what this book was actually trying to accomplish – I feel that using the example application was confusing and inconsistently implemented. Having read many programming books over the years, this feels like it almost jumped back and forth between a “Program Along With This Example App” book and a “Web App with WordPress Recipe Book”. Many of the sections seemed to flow extremely badly with one another and occasionally I just felt overwhelmed as a reader trying to keep track of where it was going. I feel that about � of the book is quite simply pure information or quick “recipes” that could be looked up online in the codex.

With all of those experiences I feel that my end feelings towards this book is that it makes a superb reference book. It is something I am happy to have read, and some chapters were immediately helpful to me and provided a good starting point, but I don't feel like this book demonstrated to me how to actually build a full web application with WordPress which is what I was really hoping for.

I do encourage individuals looking to get a start on web application development with WordPress to pick up this book as a reference. But I think this book format made it difficult to read overall, and I didn't get the feeling I would know how to build a full web application with WordPress just as a result of having read this book.

About the Author
Steinberg is Professor of Psychology at Temple University, where he directs the university's program in Developmental Psychology. He has taught previously at Cornell University, the University of California at Irvine, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was educated at Johns Hopkins University and Vassar College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors and distinction in psychology; and at Cornell University, where he received his Ph.D. in human development and family studies. Great material, but...

I think this book does a wonderful job taking readers through biological, cognitive, and relationship changes during adolescence. I was really impressed by the inclusion of the latest research modifying Piaget's theories. I agree with other users saying this book was repetitive, but sometimes the repetition was the topic as viewed from different perspectives (ex: Baumrind's authoritative parenting and how it applies to education-teaching, education-administrative policies, education-poverty-stricken neighborhoods, education-self esteem issues, education-hormonal changes, etc.).

I would have given it four stars, except that the author tends to loose objectivity when discussing hot-button topics such as homosexuality, abortion, and contraception. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book!

An OK figure reference, but can't equal digital images

The images in this reference are range from classic to cheesecake, and both female and male. The images are photographed from multiple angles, level with the photographer, above, and below, and rotating around the model. That's helpful. There's multiple pictures on each page, so most are only about the size of a playing card. That's not as good. The colors were faded in the copy that I received, which I suspect is just an indication of the age of the book. Printed figure photo books can't really hold a candle to digital books such as the Art Models seriesArt Models 3: Life Nude Photos for the Visual Arts (Art Models series) (No. 3). However, more books always provides opportunities for more poses.

Good source of reference but outclassed by today standards.

I have copy of this book and it must have been a pretty good reference source years ago when it came out (back in 1989). Back then it would have rated maybe 4 or 5 stars. Now..., well like the one reviewer said it doesn't hold a candle to the newer books out there. If you have it can be very useful, but would I get it now for $34 when the other art model books cost around $20!? Although it has some good useful poses, shown in lots of angles, and the models are attractive. Also as a nude reference its not too hard for a decently skilled artist to make adjustments on the poses if they want to. A decently good book but the only reason to really get it at the listed price is to add to a collection since its an older publication and out of print, it could become valuable as a collectors item. If you just want to study figures you will get more value for your money buying other books.

PROS:
-decent amount of good useful poses
-lots of angles on the same pose
-could be a good collectors item

CONS:
-totally outclassed by other newer books out there
-pictures aren't that big
-more expensive than other better books
-not a good value for the money

A book for successful businessmen and academics

The Obstacle is the Way digs into how knowledge and reason are in fact the highest good, as well as how to stay indifferent to pleasure and pain and how to respond to the vicissitudes of fortune objectively. The key is to not let your emotions color your perception of the world.

Ryan not only provides a great review of stoicism, he does an excellent job at articulating exactly how this school of thought can be applied to any problems that you might be facing now as you try to advance your career or transition from academia into a new career. He also provides an ample number of takeaways in the book. The Obstacle is the Way goes beyond the philosophy of stoicism simply by making the philosophy actionable. Reading this book will make you take action. Rational action.

If you're looking to:

-Take your career to the next level by getting a promotion (even though someone else is standing in your way)
-Transition out of academia and into a new career to finally get paid what you're worth (even though you don't have any business connections)

Finally someone who tells you that WISHING isn't enough

"The Obstacle is the Way" is one of those rare self-help / personal development books that actually can make a difference in your life. Unlike all those "you only have to believe hard enough / wish for something hard enough, and it will appear" books, this book shows you how to really get closer to your goals. And the author is also honest about one important fact: miracles don't just happen on their own, dreams don't just come true without any input from yourself. Ryan Holiday shows you what hinders you, and how you can use these obstacles to your advantage. I found this book to be well written and also quite useful. It was fantastic and refreshing to read a book that is written by an author who doesn't follow the mainstream "Secret". It also became quite clear that Mr Holiday has read quite a few good personal development books himself, and you might find yourself inspired to follow his example.

Amazing, but never true

No doubt, you are trying to get ahead in whatever ‘getting ahead’ means to you. But so often an obstacle seems to stand in your way. Yes, there are a few people who report having planned their charmed life or their business success and had it unfold almost exactly as planned, and with style and elegance. Amazing, but never true. Most people blocked by the obstacles of time, money, connections, opportunity and more, do nothing.
This book has a fascinating take on ‘being stuck’ – it is a primer on how to turn adversity to advantage, as the subtitle explains.
Let me state upfront – I am bored by motivational talks and books. I find very little about them interesting or useful twelve hours later. This book is not a motivational text, though it is motivating as many good books are.
The “Ancient Art” of the subtitle is referring to the wisdom and insight of the Stoic philosophers. These writings or thoughts influenced all the people Holiday uses as examples of this approach to obstacles of life. The circumstances of these people would leave most disoriented, reactive, torn and even paralyzed. As Holiday shows “some seem to turn those very obstacles, which stymie us, into launching pads for themselves.”
Knowing that there are heroes doesn’t help us to become heroes, but knowing how they became heroes, does. The value of this book is that it offers an ancient and profound method and framework for understanding, appreciating, and acting in the face of the obstacles life throws at us.
Turning obstacles into the way forward takes many forms. For the great Athenian orator, Demosthenes, it was a relentless drive to improve himself through action and practice. For Abraham Lincoln it was humility, endurance, and compassionate will. In each case, all the people cited in this book were not born with the attributes it took to succeed, and many faced unimaginable horrors, from imprisonment to debilitating illnesses, and of course the day-to-day frustrations we all endure.
So, what did they do? “They had the ability to see obstacles for what they were, the ingenuity to tackle them, and the will to endure a world mostly beyond their comprehension and control,” Holiday explains.
The perspective is not a self-delusional, positive and happy one, ‘this is not so bad’, but rather, ‘I can make this good’.
The starting point is maintaining a state of mind that one of Holiday’s examples, the extraordinary businessman, John D. Rockefeller, had perfected: cool headedness and self-discipline.
When America send the first astronauts into space, they trained them in one skill more than in any other: the art of not panicking. When people panic, they make mistakes. They just react, but not to what they need to react to, but to their survival hormones. At 150 miles above Earth, panic is suicide. Panic had to be trained out of the astronauts and it does not go easily. It must be trained away, through persistent, repeated attempts at not panicking, until you don’t.
Talent isn’t the most important characteristic for success, grace and poise are, because these precede the opportunity to deploy your talent.
The action after the panic allows for a change of perception that is a prerequisite for right action. George Clooney spent his first years in Hollywood getting rejected at every audition. He desperately wanted the producers and directors to like him, and they didn’t. He blamed them for not seeing how good he was. His life changed when he changed perspective, from self-centredness to that of other-centeredness, not possible in panic mode.
Producers need to find the right actor to cast in their film, and they all hope that the next person to walk into the room is the right actor. When Clooney realized that he was the answer to their prayers, not the other way around, his performance improved and so did his career.
Consider the refusal to fund your company. I could be an obstacle, or a call for a change of action. Getting the person to fund you this isn’t up to you, but the decision to refine and improve your presentation is.
Consider the number of exceptional businesses started during depressions or economic crises.
Fortune magazine was founded soon after the crash of 1929. Hewlett-Packard, and Revlon in the Great Depression. General Motors in the panic of 1907. Microsoft in the recession in 1973-75. LinkedIn during the burst of the dot-com bubble. Half the companies in the Fortune 500 were started under adverse conditions.
Rather than focus on the difficulties of an economy in free-fall, they focused on what they needed to do to succeed, and that produced the difference. This difference requires presence of mind.
Andy Grove, former CEO of Intel, said “Bad companies are destroyed by crisis. Good companies survive them. Great companies are improved by them.” In like fashion, great individuals find a way to transform weakness into strength.
This is essentially a very practical book which will introduce you to a wealth of important ideas beyond what I have introduced in this column. They will be of extraordinary value as you try to facedown business crises.
